Merrykom lifts gold in style
Jyotsana records quickest win
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 30
M. C. Merrykom of Manipur, the first woman boxer of India to win a medal in the World Championship, reasserted her class when she effortlessly outpointed Mamata Panda of Madhya Pradesh 24-15 in the light fly weight final of the second Women’s Senior National Boxing Championship at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the Capital today.

Merrykom, who shifted from athletics to boxing for better prospects, has proved that her decision has been right, as she was an easy winner of the gold, when she time and again cornered Panda with a combination of left-right jabs and hooks. Quick on the feet, and packing power in her punches, Merrykom earned enough points in the first two rounds to ensure her golden triumph.

Merrykom had created history when she won the 48kg silver in the World Women’s Boxing Championship held at Scrabton, Pennsylvania, from November 27 to December 2.

She has now set her sights on representing India in the Olympic Games to be held in Athens in 2004, where women’s boxing is likely to be included as a medal event.

On a day when most of the final bouts ended in RSCs (Referee Stopped the Contest), Jyotsana of Haryana recorded the fastest victory when she pounded out Reena Kanwar of Uttaranchal in the very first round (RSC) in the heavyweight division.

K. C. Lekha of Kerala, who had missed out on a medal very narrowly in the World Championship at Scrabton, scored a second round RSC victory against Sawgita Khalkho, in the light heavy weight category. Karamjit Kaur of Punjab gave heavy punishment to Asha Devi of Himachal Pradesh before the referee stopped the bout in the third round. Another Punjab girl, Rupinder Kaur, also scored an RSC victory against Taruna Mishra of Jharkhand in the light middleweight in the second round.

Lal Malswami Hlono of MEG won a RSC decision over Jenny R L of Mizoram in welter weight while Delhi’s Jyoti Sharma fought off stiff opposition from Seema Devi of Haryana to score a narrow 21-20 verdict in the light welter. In other final bouts, L Sushil Devi of Manipur outpointed Lalbaik Sangi of Mizoram in the pin weight, Meena Kumari of Haryana beat Asharani Devi of Manipur through RSC in the fly weight, Sushma Kumari of Haryana beat W Sandhya Rani of Manipur in bantam weight and Menakshi of Punjab beat L Sarita Devi of Manipur in feather weight.

Indian Olympic Association secretary-general Raja Randhir Singh gave away the prizes. Indian Amateur Boxing Association president R S Dalal, IPS and SAI director-general Sekhar Dutt were also present to witness the final bouts.

Air Force, Garhwal Heroes share points in DSA League
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 30
Former champions Indian Air Force, New Delhi, and Garhwal Heroes played a goalless draw to share points in a B Division match of the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA)-SAIL Senior Division League Championship at Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital today.

Air Force have collected four points from two matches while Garhwal Heroes have earned two points from three matches.

Though the Airmen held the upper hand in exchanges as medios Joyenta Dass and Prosentjit Mukherjee set up nice passes, forwards Priya Darshan, Kalan Pal and Ibadat Hoosen failed to capitalise on the chances. Heroes’ custodian Kiran also kept an alert vigil under the bar to foil the Air Force designs.

In the second half, Garhwal Heroes tightened their

defence and then mounted a series of assaults at the Air Force goal, but the Airmen withstood the fusillade of attacks to emerge unscathed.

Libi Raj and Naveen Parmar initiated most of the moves from midfield, but forwards Surinder and Ravinder could not make use of the chances. Air Force custodian Arbindo Bandopadhyay effected two fine saves to prevent Heroes’ from scoring.

Monday’s fixtures: Shastri vs Delhi Police (1.30 p m); Indian Nationals vs Youngsters (3 p m)–Ambedkar Stadium.

Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 30
Deadly bowling of 3 for 23 by Rajasthan Ranji Trophy medium-pacer Parmod Yadav, 3 for 19 by off-spinner Ajit Chandela and an unbeaten knock of 48 by Paras Parjapat helped hosts and defending champions Friends Club beat Indian Air Force by six wickets to enter the semi-finals of the second Friends Cricket Tournament at Dharuhera in Rewari district today.

Electing to bat, the Air Force batsmen could not handle the devastating bowling of Parmod Yadav and Ajit Chandela, and they folded up for 134 in 27.5 overs. The Air Force total was given some respectability by the 68-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Satish Upadhayay (43, 36b, 3x4) and A K Mohanty (39, 45b, 4x4, 1x6).

In reply, Friends Club scored 138 runs for the loss of four wickets in 27.2 overs. Paras Parjapat scored an unbeaten 48 off 44 balls with the help of five fours and one six. Mirnal Sen scored 37. Paras Parjapat was declared the Mishra Sports Man of the Match.

Delhi emerge champions in National School Games
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 30
Delhi did remarkably well by winning the overall team championship in the 47th National School Games 2001, organised by the Sports Branch of the Directorate of Education, Delhi Government, which concluded at Chhatrasal Stadium in the Capital today.

Delhi Education Minister R.K. Chauhan complimented the Delhi team for doing well in the games as “sports are complimentary to education”. He appreciated the efforts being put in by the Sports Department to improve the sports standard in Delhi schools.

Also present on the occasion were Education Director Sri Gyanendra Srivastava and Deputy Director Mahabali Satpal along with president of the School Games Federation of India C.L. Negi.

Competitions were held in cricket, baseball, basketball, handball, hockey, wrestling and judo, in which more than 4,500 boys and girls from 15 schools of 28 states and Union Territories took part. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had inaugurated the games on December 26.

Delhi secured first positions in many disciplines which showed the reserve of talent in Delhi’s Government schools, functioning under the Directorate Education. Though a lot needs to be done, the Government schools in Delhi are changing their sport profiles for the better.
