Robert Mugabe
Ranga

ROBERT Mugabe of Zimbabwe was in Delhi in 1981 as his country’s Prime Minister. He became Prime Minister in 1980 and in 1988 he took control of his country as President and he continues in that capacity to date. During his short stay in the Capital, he fulfilled all his engagements, including his visit to Rajghat, where he paid homage to the Father of the Nation — Mahatma Gandhi. As he came out of the samadhi, I was able to present him with the sketch I had drawn of him. His aides made way for Indian officials and the sketch could reach the hands of Mugabe. He was amused at the first sight of the picture and took pains to sit on a chair nearby and write, "Am greatly impressed by the interest shown in Zimbabwe by the Indian people", before he affixed his signature on the sketch. This was on May 23, 1981, a year after he became the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe.
