NDA defers announcement of Alexander’s name

A delegation of Opposition parties today had a 35-minute meeting with President K.R. Narayanan, requesting him to stand for the second term since the National Democratic Alliance’s likely nominee for the post of President, Mr P. C. Alexander, was ‘unacceptable’ to them even as the NDA today indefinitely postponed its meeting on the issue.

Govt for Gen Surjit as PPSC member
Chandigarh, June 9
The Punjab Government has forwarded the name of Lt-Gen Surjit Singh (retd), a former GoC-in-C of the Western Command, for appointment as a member of the Punjab Public Service Commission to the Governor, according to informed sources.

One killed in Gujarat violence
Ahmedabad, June 9
One person was killed and 22 were injured, six in police firing, as violence erupted after a brief lull with mobs hurling crude bombs and stones in the Juhapura and Guptanagar localities here today, police sources said.
