American and Kurdish forces completed their conquest of northern Iraq by taking Mosul without a fight, as Baghdad and other captured cities descended into anarchy.

Heavy shelling by Pakistani troops in Kargil, Dras sectors
Srinagar, April 12
Life came to a standstill in Kargil and Dras after Pakistani troops opened unprovoked artillery and mortar shelling from across the border, damaging two houses. Reports of shelling by Pakistani troops were received from Uri sector also.

Private schools getting popular in rural Punjab Chandigarh, April 12 People seem to have started preferring private schools being set up in the unorganised sector in the countryside in Punjab, according to the finding of an “economic survey” conducted in the state. The enrolment of students in government and private affiliated and recognised schools declined to 39.22 lakh in 2001 from 39.48 lakh in the previous year.
