Hard work pays’

Commenting on the recent Abhijit Kale controversy, Kapil Dev asked in today’s world, how could one afford to spare Rs 20 lakh to pay for playing cricket. He said one should not think negative only, as if one worked hard with a positive frame of mind, hard work would certainly pay one day. Asked if the controversy had tarnished the image of cricket, Kapil responded by saying, “Yes,it has.”

Chandigarh, December 5
Kapil Dev, the brand ambassador of Sony MAX, stole the hearts of hundreds of children who gathered at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, and Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, today. He advocated maintaining a healthy approach in sports and education. The two schools were selected as part of the 11-city campaign launched by MAX as part of the build- up to the ICC World Cup in 2004 undertaken by MAX.

At 11 am, Kapil made his entry into the St Stephen’s auditorium, where scores of students greeted him with applause. After carol singing and introduction to the programme by Sony Max personnel, Kapil was invited to the stage.

In his 20-minute straight talk with students, he asked them to respect the word ‘discipline’. He wanted to practically prove to the audience that concentration, was required in every field, be it studies, or sports. He told them to study hard so as to become a worthy human being. He asked them to balance their time schedule for studies and sports.

Kapil said it was not that all of them should play cricket only, but everyone must include sports in their day-to-day life so as to absorb many qualities required in life such as leadership, patience and confidence He said he was never a brilliant student during his school days.

Though he got disappointments in cricket on many occasions, he had set a goal and had the determination to do well, which he said, was achieved with the grace of the God and the wishes of the people. One of the students asked him, how he was able to tackle controversies as a celebrity. Kapil said, if one’s mind was clear, no power could deviate it.

At YPS, where the programme began at 1.30 pm, there were accolades for this former cricketer. A colourful bhangra was performed, which regaled the chief guest, guests and children. He played and demonstrated tips on cricket with chosen bowlers at both the schools.

Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, December 5
The UT Education Department has decided to send its school sports teams for the 49th National School Games to be conducted by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). Mr Prem Puri, vice-president of the SGFI, said the Patiala National School Games, which began last evening in select disciplines, were being hosted by a breakway group to spoil the career of thousands of school sportspersons of India.
