DIG deputed to probe molestation case
Ludhiana, December 5
Taking suo motu action of a news report published in The Tribune regarding the alleged sufferings of a Punjab Police woman constable, who was allegedly molested by a senior officer, the Punjab State Women's Commission (PSWC) has directed the ADGP (Crime) to immediate depute the DIG (Crime) for conducting an inquiry into the matter within a month.

Seven-year RI in rape case
Ludhiana, December 5
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Sunil Arora, has convicted and sentenced Ram Avadh (23) of Salem Tabri to undergo seven years rigorous imprisonment on the charge of abducting and raping a minor girl. A fine of Rs 2500 was also imposed upon the accused.

Voting rights to Sehajdharis: HC notice to Home Ministry
Ludhiana, December 5
The Punjab and Haryana High court has issued notice for December 10 to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the SGPC chief and the Gurdwara Election Commission for the notification issued by the Home Ministry disenfranching Sehajdhari Sikhs in the SGPC elections. The move to do so was challenged through a public interest litigation by the Sehajdhari Sikh Federation (SSF) through its national president, Dr P.S. Ranu.

Villagers seek quashing of FIR against sarpanch
Khanna, December 5
A delegation of panchayat members of Bulepur village today demanded the quashing of an FIR lodged against Mr Yadwinder Singh, sarpanch of the village, and six other persons on Wednesday on the charges of allegedly demolishing a house of a Dalit in the village. The father of the sarpanch, Mr Kuldeep Singh, who was also present at the meeting, said his son and other persons had been falsely implicated in the case.

Staff contribute to Flag Day fund

To observe Flag Day, a simple function was organised in the mini secretariat under the chairmanship of Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner and president of the District Sainik Welfare Board, in which the Flag Day fund collection was started by Lt Cdr Tarlochan Singh, District Sanik Welfare Officer, by pinning a flag on the lapel of the DC.

Industrialist drugged, looted
Ludhiana, December 5
A city industrialist has become the latest victim of a gang operating in various trains and roads and specialising in drugging and looting people. Darshan Singh, a resident of Janta Nagar in Shimla Puri was allegedly drugged and looted by two persons at Ambala in a train.

Claims and counter-claims are being forwarded by steel consumers and manufacturers over the rising steel prices in the country. The manufacturers maintain that the input costs are rising and they have no option but to raise the prices.

Bee-keepers, who have been working hard to make a mark in the honey business, have been facing a host of problems. These problems came up for discussion at a meeting of members of the Punjab Bee-Keeping Club with PAU scientists at the Kairon Kisan Ghar, PAU, on December 3.

As many as 35 cases out of 60 were settled in a special labour Lok Adalat organised at New Judicial Complex here today. The adalat was also instrumental in providing Rs 50,000 to the affected parties.

Mrs India eyes Mrs World title

After winning the Gladrags Mrs India-2004 title, Ms Naina Dhaliwal, who belongs to the city, has her eyes set on the Mrs World title to be held at Los Angeles in USA next year. Naina, 23, who returned to her hometown on Wednesday after winning the coveted title in Mumbai, said: “A positive bent of mind coupled with self-confidence is all that you need to be on the top.’’ She was talking to TNS here.

Athletics meet at Sacred Heart begins

A three-day athletics meet of the local Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, got off to a colourful start. Olympian and Asian Games gold medallist (shot put), Bahadur Singh, declared the meet open. Manjeet Kaur, member of the gold medal winning relay team in the Asian Games, was the guest of honour.
