Amritsar
Elected fellow
: Prof. Subodh Kumar, Prof. in chemistry at Guru Nanak Dev University, has been elected fellow of the National Science Academy of India (Allahabad). He has more than 100 publications in his name. A grant of Rs 60 lakh was sanctioned by the Department of Science and Technology to the Chemistry Department under the FIST programme due to his efforts.

Foundation stone: The Director-General and executive secretary of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, Mr Dhiru S Mehta, laid the foundation stone of a multipurpose auditorium on Wednesday evening in memory of the Chairman, Mr P.D. Kumar, S.L. Public School. The principal of the school, Mrs Anita Bhalla, read out the annual report.

School function: The Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, Dr S.P. Singh, presiding over the annual prize distribution function of Manav Public School, said the young generation should work hard to achieve their goals. He pointed out that the youth had greater responsibility on their shoulders to take the nation forward. Later, he gave away prizes and trophies to toppers.

Refresher course: A three-week refresher course in Physics was started at the Academic Staff College, Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 30 teachers participated from colleges and universities in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Maharashtra to attend the course. Dr T.S. Gill, Head of Department of Physics, GNDU, inaugurated the session on Thursday.

Deputation: A five-member deputation of the Punjab State Pensioners Confederation led by Mr Avtar Singh Afat, patron, met Capt. Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister, and demanded that rates of medical items be revised and medical allowance increased from Rs 250 per month to Rs 500 per month.

OFFICE BEARERS: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Deep Nagar Mohalla Committee: president — Mr Jagdish Raj Bansal, vice-president—Mr Krishan Lal Bhatia; secretary—Mr M.R.Madan; and cashier— Mr Vinod Bansal.

MEDICAL CAMP: The Lions Club Bathinda Classic will organise a medical camp on December 7 for patients suffering from diseases pertaining to prostate, T.U.R.R. and urinary disorders.

Prize distribution
: The District Tournament Committee organised its annual prize distribution function here at JSFH Khalsa High School on Thursday. Mr Parkash Singh, local MLA, was the chief guest and Mr Vikram Rahul, District Education Officer, presided over the function. Teams and players who excelled in various sports and athletic events were honoured. A cultural function was also organised.

Poster on AIDS
: The Mazdoor Seva Samiti has released a poster on AIDS to make the truck drivers aware about the consequences of the disease. Mr Surinder Mahajan, local Beopar Mandal chief, has assured the samiti of all help.

Seminar: A seminar to acquaint the teaching community with various aspects of teachings and challenges faced in imparting education to teenagers was held at Government Elementary School, Magrela, near here, on Thursday under the Sarv Siksha Abhiyan.

PLEA FOR STATUE: Brig H.S. Chandel, who is also president of the HP Ex-servicemen Association, has urged the Himachal Government to install a life-size statue of warrior Zorawar Singh in the town. There was conclusive historical evidence that the General of Raja Gulab Singh’s army was born at Bilaspur, then named Kehloor.
