DGP’s
plan to reform Punjab jails

To modernise prisons in the
state, the Director-General of Prisons, Punjab, Mr A.P. Bhatnagar, has
made 12 recommendations to the government, besides highlighting the
pathetic condition of some of the prisons.

expansion after December 10, says Amarinder

The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt
Amarinder Singh, today said he would meet Party President Sonia Gandhi
on December 10 to discuss the proposed Cabinet expansion in the state
and said he expected around seven to eight more members to be sworn in
the state cabinet.

has proposed an Election Commission model system for holding
examinations. As in the case of elections, during the annual
examination period the requisite staff on duty should be considered on
‘’deputation’’ to the board.
Punwire
scam: CBI charge sheet in six months
SAS Nagar, December 6
The CBI has finally decided to
file a charge sheet in the multi-crore Punwire scam, almost four years
after the first FIR in the case was registered by the Punjab police.
The investigation in the case was handed over to the CBI by the
Supreme Court in May last year.

INTACH
to restore lost character of Jallianwala Bagh
Amritsar, December 6
The Indian National Trust for
Art, Culture and Heritage will soon launch a programme to restore the
original character of the historic Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar.
Conceding that Jallianwala Bagh needed special attention, Mr S.K.
Mishra from INTACH, also chairman, Amritsar Heritage Society,
confirmed that INTACH had identified experts who will collaborate with
the local MC to prepare a document that would serve as basis for
restoration of the original character of Jallianwala Bagh.

under way here, the Ram Bagh Gate area, declared protected, has been
encroached upon by a dairy owner, who has raised a triple-storeyed

Taking note of the plight of
37-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter who have been fighting
a lone battle against AIDS for six months in Bathinda, the Punjab
State Human Rights Commission yesterday directed the Deputy
Commissioner, Bathinda, to look into the matter personally and provide
the maximum help permissible under the law while keeping in mind human
considerations.

writes to Jagmohan on building bylaws

made a plea to Mr Jagmohan, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture,
seeking relaxation in the bylaws pertaining to the construction and
