AICC panel meets Punjab dissidents
New Delhi, December 12
Hectic efforts were being made by the Congress Central leadership till late tonight to defuse the dissidence crisis in the Punjab Congress. With the dissident group persisting with its demand for the removal of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, the AICC panel held several meetings throughout the day to mollify them.

After a brief lull, the Congress leadership today renewed its efforts to end the factional battle in its Kerala unit. Capping a day of hectic activities, Kerala Chief Minister A.K.Antony today met Congress President Sonia Gandhi to apprise her of the situation in the state. However, veteran leader K. Karunakaran, who is insisting on Mr Antony’s removal, showed no signs of relenting on his demand.

The Supreme Court today put off the hearing on a petition seeking setting up of an inquiry commission to probe leaking the name of the National Highway Authority of India engineer Satyendra Dubey. He was killed for bringing to the Prime Minister’s notice rampant corruption in the Bihar leg of the Golden Quadrilateral road project.


UPSC loses vision for disabled
New Delhi, December 12
It took a rejection letter from the Union Public Service Commission to make Ravi Kumar, a person with very low vision, to realise he is disabled. “I did not know I am a visually disabled person till I took the civil services examination”, says Ravi, an aspirant who despite having cleared the prestigious examination has been turned down by the UPSC on the grounds of “visual disability”.
