Brick-kiln owners hold rally 
Raise slogans against land mafia, police
Ludhiana, December 12
Continuing their protest against the alleged inaction of the police against the land mafia, who was allegedly not allowing the smooth operations of JM Brick-Kiln at Kanech village, the members of Ludhiana District Brick Kiln Owners Association, (LDBKA) and workers staged a dharna at Chattar Singh Park and later took out a rally which culminated outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here today.

No more basking in sun for govt teachers
Ludhiana, December 12
Government school teachers and students will no longer be allowed to enjoy the sun this winters. All lessons will now be conducted in classrooms and no teacher will be allowed to bring students out in the sun.

BSNL launches ‘Tarang’
Ludhiana, December 12
The wireless in local loop (WLL) service of the BSNL, “Tarang”, was formally-launched here today by Mr Prithipal Singh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), BSNL. The service will connect customers to any type of network, including landline, mobile (GSM) and WLL(CDMA), using radio frequency signals as a substitute for conventional wires for all or a part of connection between subscribers and telephone exchange.

Gone are those days when the Punjabi girls wore only traditional salwar suits. Now thanks to media and fashion TV channels the girls not only like to dress in fashionable clothes but also in those that will keep them warm in winters. Many girls have started wearing jeans and trousers. Vandana and Jitu of Devki Devi say,” We like to wear short jackets and jeans. If the day is cold then we wear long coats and trousers. Tops are generally short.  Pants have to be figure-hugging. It is important that we have a daring attitude. The college authorities are also becoming tolerant of our dresses. But we also take care that we don’t offend the authorities.”

All set for Vijay Divas 
Ludhiana, December 12
Elaborate arrangements are being made to pay tributes to the war heroes belonging to this district on the occasion of Vijay Divas on December 16. With the nation saluting the heroes, who laid down their lives fighting for the country’s honour in 1971 Indo-Pak war, Ludhiana is witnessing hectic preparation to mark the historical day next Tuesday.

The fact that no two persons in the world have identical thumb impressions was used for doing “Nadi” predictions.

ABVP to observe security week from today

The local unit of the ABVP has decided to observe National Security Week from December 13. This was stated by vice-president of the Punjab unit of the ABVP at a press conference held at Basant Restaurant. Taxation Bar terms VAT a ‘black law’
Ludhiana, December 12
The District Taxation Bar Association (Sales Tax) has expressed its strong opposition to the proposed valued-added tax (VAT) terming it a “black law”. The members of the bar were equivocal to observe that unless implemented in the entire country with suitable amendments, the law would fail to have the desired results.

Crisis-ridden bicycle industry threatens to agitate
Ludhiana, December 12
The bicycle and parts industry, reeling under the adverse impact of rising prices of raw material, high rates of taxes and duties and cumbersome procedures, has threatened to launch an agitation if the government fails to initiate remedial measures without further delay.

Om Parkesh Bansal Modern School celebrated the First part of its 5th annual day cultural show and prize distribution function here today. Members of the Panjab College Science Teachers Association at a meeting held here on Wednesday condemned the reported move of marginalising candidates of physical sciences from getting sizeable shares in the UPSC and state service commissions by the lobby of social sciences people. The members said that it was highly unjustified to discriminate against the best and most intelligent section of society, including engineers, doctors and scientists.

Avoid long-term exposure to UV rays, says expert
Ludhiana, December 12
At least 90 per cent of skin cancers result from long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Sunlight is also responsible for wrinkles, blotching and drying of the skin, making one age before time. According to latest findings of Dr Alka Dogra, Head, Department of Dermatology, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), the best defence against the effects of sun rays is to limit time spent in the sun and to protect oneself in doors.

Admn gears up for pulse polio drive
Ludhiana, December 12
To ensure complete immunisation of children in the age group zero to five years, under the intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation Campaign, 2004, the district administration has made foolproof arrangements. As many as 4.87 lakh children would be administered Polio drops at more than 2100 booths. Around 8,800 officials, including doctors, paramedical staff, employees from other departments concerned and volunteers of the Rotary Club and other NGOs will be involved in the campaign.

Jain doctors to hold international conference
Ludhiana, December 12
The first-ever international Jain doctors’ conference will be held at Koba (Gandhinagar) on January 3-4. Dr Satish Jain, Medical Superintendent, Mohan Dai Cancer Hospital in a press note yesterday said about 1500-2000 delegates from all over the country and abroad were expected to attend it.

P.J. Singh, Gurmeet win shot put titles
Ludhiana, December 12
P.J. Singh of the Bikaner division in the men’s section and Gurmeet Kaur of the Delhi division in the women’s section emerged victorious in the shot put event in the 37th Zonal Athletics Meet of the Life Insurance Corporation of India, which began at Punjab Agricultural University ground here today. In the gruelling 5000m race for men, Love Kumar and Dheeraj Dass of Jalandhar and Amritsar divisions, respectively, finished first and second.
