Providential escape for 3-year-old boy
Falls into uncovered manhole, area residents protest
Ludhiana, December 13
It was sheer providence that saved a three-year-old boy when he fell into an uncovered manhole in Anand Nagar area here today. Tinshu Kapoor, a son of a cloth merchant, was going with his mother, Sangeeta Kapoor when he fell into a manhole located in the middle of the road.

City businessman held in fraud case
Ludhiana, December 13
While a local trader, Mr Darshan Aggarwal, the main accused in the Rs 1.38 crore fraud with ICICI Bank in New Delhi still continues to elude the police dragnet, the crime branch of Delhi police has arrested almost half a dozen persons, including, another city business man, Mr Rohit Gandhi.

Stamp vendors back at mini-secretariat

After the typists, deed writers and stamp vendors were removed from the mini-secretariat complex on Thursday, vacated persons came back with their paraphernalia outside the Bachat Bhavan cocking a snook at the action of the district administration.

30 schools opened for slum kids
Ludhiana, December 13
Coming to the aid of hundreds of unprivileged children residing in slum areas of the district, the elementary wing of the District Education Department has opened 30 schools in remote areas here.

SachinBoy missing
Ludhiana, December 13
Sachin, an 18-year-old boy of New Ashok Nagar, has been missing from his residence since December 8. He had left his house in the morning but did not return till evening following which his father, Ram Dular, raised the alarm.

Ludhiana at forefront of Cong dissidence 
Ludhiana, December 13
While Ludhiana had cheered the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, at the time of elections to the Assembly, as the district had elected as many as eight out of 12 legislators from the party, now the same district appears to be the main headache for him. Most of the legislators of the district are at the forefront of the dissidents’ campaign being spearheaded against him by his arch rival and Agriculture Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.

Man awaits  compensation for son’s death
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 13
Thirty-three months after the death of his son while digging a well, he is running from pillar to post to get compensation from the Punjab Government. Bhadur Ali (65), a resident of Rohira village, said his son Sabar had died on March 17, 2001. Sabar got buried under the earth while digging a well in the fields of Bhola Singh of Ramgarh Sardaran village on March 5.

Discrimination alleged in recarpeting of road
Ludhiana, December 13
It has been officially confirmed that the work for the recarpeting of a part of road in J Block of Sarabha Nagar Colony in ward no 41 was done without any estimate being sanctioned by the Municipal Corporation, and no approval for the work was sought by the contractor from the officials concerned of the B and R wing of the civic body.

Christmas preparations pick up
Ludhiana, December 13
The Christmas preparations are on in the city. Shops are displaying Christmas trees and colourful portly red and white Santa Clauses. The preparations for Christmas starts from December 1 in “Advent Season”. The preparations for baking special plum cakes starts in this season.

Fired with imagination to do something different

"Small is beautiful;" says Vijay Kumar Momi. That is why his endeavour is always to make extremely small things and create something different. The latest of his feats is the creation of a half-inch book. From cover to cover, he has filled the tiny pages with writing of four symbols of four important religions, Gayatri Mantras and many other things.

Iron and steel industry  in distress
Ludhiana, December 13
Due to abnormal rise in prices of iron and steel, the industry appears to be in total distress. According to the industry representatives, the situation has gone from bad to worse with the Union Government remaining callously indifferent towards the problem.

Non-ferrous metal godown for city
Ludhiana, December 13
The Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India is likely to set up a warehouse and godown in Ludhiana for non-ferrous metals like nickel, zinc and copper within a month. The metals would be supplied to the consumers at the LME rates.

Motor parts manufacturers condemn hike in power tariff
Ludhiana, December 13
The recent proposal to make 33 per cent hike in the power tariff made by the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) to Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) was strongly condemned by Ludhiana Motor Parts Manufacturers Association.

SCERT trains 60,000 teachers
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 13
State Council of Educational Research and Training has trained more than 60,000 teachers posted at various government schools. The council also plans to educate members of Pendu Sewa Vikas Committees and mother-teacher associations at cluster level.

The Association of Teaching Staff of Lord Mahavira Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital will start its protest dharna in front of the Principal's office from December 15.

Kuhu, Kenchit win mock test
Ludhiana, December 13
Kuhu Verma and Kenchit Goyal have bagged the first position in the mock test organised by the better thinking learning systems. The test was based on the pattern of Class X examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education on November 30 this year.

Muskan wins smart kid contest
Ludhiana, December 13
An inter-school Smart Kid Contest was organised at GRD Academy here today. Nearly 65 students from 16 schools of the district participated in the contest.
Three rounds were conducted in the contest. The first round was an introductory round in which children recited poems and sung songs. Twenty students were screened who participated in a dance round.

Tiny tots celebrate annual day
Ludhiana, December 13
Students of Hollyhock Nursery School, Civil Lines, celebrated annual day at Guru Nanak Bhavan here yesterday. The programme began with a Saraswati vandana. This was followed by a song, presented by students of the Pre-nursery sections.

Carol-singing contest held
Ludhiana, December 13
An inter-house carol singing competition was organised at Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, here today.
The function began with a prayer service. The team of Green House presented carol ‘Suno re bhai, suno re behno’, which was adjudged as the best. The carol ‘Ik tara chamka hai’ sang Red House was adjudged second. Gold House and Blue House presentations were placed third and fourth, respectively.

IAS, PCS officers attend training course

The Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, organised a three-days training course for IAS and PCS officers.
The officers also interacted with Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor of the university. He said the agricultural economy needed to be understood and planned once again. There was a need of successful planning for diversification.

The Retired Teachers Association of Government College for Women celebrated its 10th anniversary at a local hotel here today. The association was formed by retired principals and officers of the college on December 6, 1983.

Physiotherapy camp  concludes at DMCH
Ludhiana, December 13
The week-long physiotherapy camp organised for senior citizens concluded at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here today. The camp had got an enthusiastic response as more than 200 elderly people benefited from the camp and more than 525 were given treatment.

Eye donation is the best kind of donation a person can give to fellow human beings. Ludhiana Midtown Jaycees will launch a vigorous campaign in the coming year and target school and college-going students to donate eyes. This statement was made by the president of the Ludhiana Midtown Jaycees, Dr Jasbir Bawa, in his presidential speech at the installation ceremony held here last night.

North Zone LIC athletics meet
Ludhiana, December 13
J.S. Bains of Chandigarh Division hogged limelight wining one gold and one silver medal in the 37th North Zonal Life Insurance Corporation of the India Athletics Meet that concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University ground here today. In the high jump event, J.S. Bains leapt to a distance to win the gold medal and later in the day, he threw the iron ball (hammer throw) to finish second after Karnail Singh of Karnal Division. Mr P.K. Rath, Senior Divisional Manager, Ludhiana, gave away prizes to the participants.
