The lack of proper facilities like wooden and terra flex courts coupled with absence of sponsorship for basketball in the country is the main reason behind India’s poor performance at the international meets.

This observation was made by Mr Harish Sharma, secretary general, Basketball Federation of India, who was in the city yesterday to supervise the preparations being done by the women cagers who are undergoing training here at the Guru Nanak Stadium prior to their participation in the Asian Basketball Championship slated to be conducted next month in Japan.

Mr Sharma said that during the last edition of the championship, India finished eighth. He, however, expressed the hope that this time the Indian team would definitely be among the first six nations out of the total 13. Eighteen women cagers are attending the camp here since November 20.
