Mumbai police help sought in
robbery case

The Jalandhar police here has sought Mumbai police’s help for apprehending Darshan Singh, main accused in the Rs 1.22 crore foreign exchange robbery case. He was reported in Mumbai following police raids at his Jawalaji residence in Himachal Pradesh last week.

SAD not to interfere in Cong affairs: Badal

Rs 558-cr Railways’ claim on PSEB disallowed

The Arbitrator appointed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court disallowed the claim of the Railways for Rs 558 crore as “surcharge” from the Punjab for violating State Electricity Board agreement with the transport agency for the supply of coal to Board’s thermal plants.

BJP meets Verma tomorrow

Mr Avinash Khanna, president of the state unit of the BJP, today revealed that a party delegation would meet the Governor, Justice O.P. Verma (retd) on Monday to submit a memorandum seeking a CBI probe into the allegations of corruption levelled by the state Agriculture Minister, Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, against the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh.

Padamjit retires, to remain PSEB adviser

Padamjit Singh, who made a name for himself during the past 35 years in the Punjab State Electricity Board for leading from the front, calling a spade a spade and working for the cause of the engineers was today given a warm send off upon his retirement.

Civil Surgeon visits jaundice-hit areas

Dr H.S. Gill, civil surgeon Amritsar today directed the Senior Medical Officer of the Primary Health Centre here to set up a serum Bilirubin test laboratory for tests of Serum Bilirubin (secretion of serum from liver) count, as some of patients had its count up to 16-18 mg which should be one mg in normal cases.

After holding that expeditious conclusion of trial was the Fundamental Right of every accused, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that a mechanism should be evolved to coordinate the appearance of official witnesses required to be present before several courts on the same day.

Mayors in Punjab given more powers

Mayors of Municipal Corporations in Punjab can now sanction developmental works to the tune of Rs 50 lakh annually. A decision to empower the Mayors with more powers was taken today by the Punjab Local Government Minister, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, to accelerate the pace of development activities in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Bathinda.

A senior Punjabi University teacher, Dr K.S. Sidhu, who has earlier served as Registrar of the university, has urged the institute’s Chancellor and Punjab Governor, Justice O.P. Verma, to order an inquiry into the “anti-academic and vindictive attitude” of Vice-Chancellor Swarn Singh Boparai.
