Abohar
succumbs to injuries
: Ashwani Garg (28) of Indira Nagri succumbed to his injuries at Nehru Memorial Civil Hospital here on Friday evening. He was injured in a road accident. He had been married a few months ago.

CASE REGISTERED: The Mahilpur police has registered a case under sections 406 and 420 of the IPC against Satwant Singh, a travel agent of Phillaur, for defrauding Mr Shamsher Singh of Pensra village of Rs 4.50 lakh. Mr Shamsher Singh had alleged that Satwant Singh took Rs 4.50 lakh from him for sending him to Italy. He neither sent him nor returned his money.

BOOKED: On a complaint of Jasbir Singh of the local DC Road, the city police has registered a case under Sections 420, 406 and 120 B of the IPC against Balwinder Singh, Surinder Singh, Hardial Singh and Ajay Sharma of Pioneer Forest India Ltd, Fatehgarh Road, for cheating investors in the name of saving schemes.

ARRESTED: The Tanda police has arrested Heera Singh and Rattan Singh of Fatta Kulla village. They were wanted in a case pertaining to the murder of Amarjit Singh son of Bahadur Singh of the same village. There was a land dispute between the accused and deceased.

CAMP: A free homoeopathic camp will be organised by the Advanced Scientific Homoeopathic Association (ASHA-2002) with the assistance of the Bharat Vikas Parishad on December 14 at the Viklang Sahayta Kendra in Rishi Nagar. Dr Daljit Sharma, Dr Sunil Verma, Dr Nirdosh Gupta and Dr Veena would examine the patients from 9 a.m to 3p.m.

LECTURE ON SIKHISM: Dr Gurubaksh Singh of America explained the importance of Sikhism. The word Sikh means a student, he further explained during the course of his lecture at Guru Nanak College here. 

Ropar
BAN ORDERS: District Magistrate, Ropar Ms Seema Jain has banned the use of uniforms bearing similarity with that of the police by the guards hired by banks, factories, private societies and other organisations. The orders have been issued following complaints of the misuse of police uniforms by the guards. The ban of the assembly of more than five persons under Section 144 of the CrPC at places other than designated by the SDM’s has also been extended till January 10, 2004.

ZIRAKPUR
Programme: A cultural programme by students marked the annual day celebrations of AC National Public Senior Secondary School here on Saturday. Students participated in events like shabad gayan, vandana, action poems, patriotic songs, skits and plays. Modern Ramayana, fancy dress show, giddha and bhangra were also presented. Dr Kehar Singh, Chairman of the Punjab School Education Board, was the chief guest. The school principal read out the annual report.

CHANDIGARH

Inauguration: A new hostel building will be inaugurated by the president of the DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, Mr G.P. Chopra, at DAV Model School, Sector 15, on Sunday. The Principal, Ms R. Sachdeva, said the hostel had been constructed with modern facilities to ensure comfortable stay of students. The building has been built at a cost of Rs 90 lakh.

Celebrations: Lectures, discourses and exhibitions would be held around the city in 2004 to observe the 150th anniversary year of holy mother Sri Sarada Devi — the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and the “Sangha Mata” of the Ramakrishna Mission. The birth anniversary celebrations would begin on December 16.

AMBALA
Function: A prize distribution function was organised by the Rashtrabhasha Vichar Manch at DAV Public School, Ambala Cantonment, on Friday. The prizes were given to the winners of a quiz competition — Meenanshu, Sonia Dhiman and Monica Kalra. At least 93 students took part in the quiz.

Lecture: The Zoology Association of SD College, Ambala Cantonment, organised a lecture on “Environment Reproduction and Sustenance” on Friday. The College Principal, Dr Desh Bandhu, presided over the function. The keynote address was delivered by Dr R.K. Sharma of Kurukshetra University. He emphasised the need for preserving the environment.

THEFT CASE: The police here has solved the theft of Rs 15,96,520 from the car of Rakesh Gupta of Patiala district. In this connection Gurcharan Singh and his wife Nitu were arrested from Ambala bus-stand. The police has recovered a sum of Rs 11,55,150 from a wheat field in the Kotla village.

Fast unto death: Sunita Devi (60) daughter of prominent freedom fighter Jagannath Sharma (84) of Chandpur could not take her father’s death lightly. She went on fast and died after 26 days of her father’s death in Shimla district.

8 injured
: Eight trainees of Police Training College, Daroh, were injured when a bus belonging to the college skidded off the road and rolled down into a khud near Baba Panja of the Matour-Shimla highway under Jawalamukhi police station on Saturday.
