Rise in heart ailments worries expert

Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, a renowned cardiac surgeon, has shown concern over the increasing frequency of cardio-vascular diseases among men and women living in the urban areas. He made these observations after examining patients at a free medical check-up and heart care camp organised by local Hind Hospital and Sigma New Life Heart Institute, Ludhiana, on Sunday.

After going through the reports of around 1,000 patients who came for diagnostic tests and treatment at the camp Dr Bedi said, “Observations have revealed that contrary to previous trend now younger men and women suffer more from cardio vascular abnormalities”.

Dr Bedi said, “About 60 per cent of the total world heart patients are Indians and 25 per cent of them are Punjabis. He said the situation was so alarming that four Indians died of heart diseases every minute. He advised patients to avoid smoking, drinking and stress and strain. Exercise and meditation were said to be other measures to keep one’s heart healthy.

Earlier the camp was inaugurated by Mr Rajnish Sharma, president, municipal council, and Mr Joginder Singh, Executive Magistrate, was the chief guest. Dr Brijesh Badhan, Dr Sunit Hind, Dr Jyoti Hind and Dr Jyotsna examined patients for various ailments. ECG, EEG, ultra sound scan and other diagnostic tests were conducted free of cost.

Free homoeopathy camp

Ludhiana, December 14
A free homeopathy camp was organised by the Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP), Kitchlu Branch, in association with the BVP Charitable Trust, Punjab, on the premises of the Viklang Sahayata Kendra, Block-C, Rishi Nagar, here today.

The occasion was inauguration of Ms Sumitra Devi Aggarwal Charitable Homoeopathy Dispensary. This dispensary has been sponsored by Mr Brijinder Mohan Gupta in the memory of his mother.

Dr Lajpat Rai, President of BVP Charitable Trust, Punjab, welcomed the chief guest, dignitaries, team of doctors and patients attending the camp. He appreciated the gesture of the Companion Hosiery, Ludhiana, for providing donations towards the dispensary. He also acknowledged the hard work being put in by the local BVP branch under the permanent project — SEWA. Dr Lajpat Rai said a physiotherapy unit had also been started in the Viklang Kendra.

Mr Brijinder Mohan Gupta said they had plans to start another homoeo dispensary on similar lines in near future in the Ramnagar area.

Dr Vipin Gupta, an associate of the Advance Scientific Homeopathic Association (ASHA - 2002), said homoeopathy had become an advanced system of medicine and it was now possible to treat all kind of ailments/diseases through the system. He added that the physically challenged would get free treatment at the dispensary, while others would be charged a nominal fee for consultancy and medicines.

Mr I.V. Thaman, state secretary, BVP Punjab (north), said the Bharat Vikas Parishad was a non-political, non-governmental, socio-cultural organisation committed to the cause of overall development of the nation.

Dr D.R.C. Bakhetia, president of the local branch, while proposing a vote of thanks stated that the earnest endeavour of the branch was to provide voluntary service to the society.

Free treatment camp

Mandi Gobindgarh, December 14
A special camp for free treatment of piles will be organised at Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College and Hospital Sounti near Amloh from December 15 to December 21. Patients will be given an injection and will be treated with the latest technique without operation by experts said principal R C Jain in a press release here today. General check-up of patients will be held on December 21 free of cost. OC

Local judoka aims high

Meenu Arora, a local judoka, is shaping well to perform at national and international level tournaments and bring laurels to the state.
A student of Class XI (commerce) of the local Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School, Udham Singh Nagar, Meenu hogged the limelight when she bagged a silver medal in the below 48 kg category (u-19 years) during the National Schools Judo Championship held in Patiala from December 5 to 11.

Prior to this meet, she had proved her mettle in the District Judo Championship, which was conducted last month here, by winning a gold medal. Then in the Punjab State Judo Championship held in Jalandhar, Meenu went down fighting against her opponent, Raman of Amritsar, in the final and had to content with a silver medal.

On the basis of their performance during the meet, both Raman and Meenu were picked for a coaching-cum-training camp held in Jalandhar from November 25 to December 4. In the final trial, Meenu put Raman to the mat and secured a berth in the team for the nationals.

Ms Sunil Arora, Principal, Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School, has congratulated Meenu and her coach Rakesh Singh for outstanding performance and assured all type of assistance on behalf of the school management in honing her skills.

New record by lifter

Ludhiana, December 14
Manjeet Singh of the local S D Government College for Boys established a new meet record in the Panjab University Inter-College Weightlifiting Championship held at the gymnasium hall of the PU campus Chandigarh on December 9 and 10.

According to Mr Harbans Singh, Sports Authority of India coach, who trained the college lifters, in the snatch event (below 77 kg category), Manjeet Singh with a lift of 122.5 kg created a new record. The previous record of 120 kg stood against the name of Sandeep of Fazilka. Other lifters of the S D Government College who won medals during this meet included gold Mohan Singh (below 56 kg) and Jagdeep Singh (below 85 kg) both gold medals; Balwinder (below 69 kg), Sunny Sharma (below 94 kg) and Harvinder Singh (below 105 kg) all bronze medals. S D Government College team got 21 points to emerge as overall champions while another local college, GGN Khalsa College secured 14 points to finish runners-up.

Schools’  soccer tourney

Ludhiana, December 14
The Satluj Football Club will organise the first Punjab School Football Tournament here at the Punjab Agriculture University ground from December 26 to 28, according to Mr Jaspal Singh Kala, president of the club. Eight top teams of the state would fight it out in the tournament to be played on knock-out basis.

Entries may be sent to Mr Anil Kumar at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, PAU or to Mr Jaspal Singh, senior football coach, Ludhiana till December 24. The winners and the runners-up will be given awards worth Rs 10,000 and Rs 8,000 respectively, Mr Singh said.
