India rejects Pakistan’s objections on fencing

New Delhi, December 14
India tonight dismissed as unacceptable Pakistan’s objections to fencing along the Line of Control on the ground that it was “violative” of UN resolutions.

“We don’t accept this thesis. We will be sharing our views with them,” External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha told mediapersons after a two-and-half-hour meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mr Sinha’s remarks came in response to a question about Pakistan’s objections to India’s putting up fences along the LoC.

The CCS meeting, the External Affairs Minister said, assessed the ground situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the light of the ceasefire with Pakistan which went into force from November 25.

The meeting, which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, Defence Minister George Fernandes and Planning Commission Deputy Chairman K C Pant, heard a first-hand account of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir from Army chief Gen N C Vij who had visited the state twice in recent weeks, especially in view of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s forthcoming visit to Islamabad to attend the SAARC Summit next month. — PTI
