NGOs urged to participate in health sector
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 19
Mr D.S Guru, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, emphasised on the need for enhancing the role of NGOs in the health sector. He was addressing a state-level workshop of NGOs and senior health administrators for the forthcoming Intensified Pulse Polio Campaign on January 4, 2004.

In a statement issued here today, Mr Guru while lauding the contribution of voluntary organisations in the pulse polio campaigns during the past nine years, urged everyone to participate in the exercise to reach each and every child below 5 years of age.

Elaborating upon the arrangements, Dr G.L. Goyal, Director, Health Services, Family Welfare, Punjab, said the state would need more than 60,000 volunteers for manning almost 16,000 camps to be organised in all villages, towns and urban slum areas of the state. He appealed to the NGOs to help in social mobilisation so that parents bring their children to the booths for polio drops.

Although Punjab had reported only one case of polio during 2003 but the need to remain vigilant is important considering the influx of large number of migrants from the states of high incidence like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The second round of the pulse polio immunisation would be held on February 22.
