BKU rejects hike in support prices
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, December 19
The Bhartia Kisan Union (BKU), while terming the hike in minimum support prices of rabi crops announced by the Union Government as meagre and inadequate, has rejected the same and sought revision of prices on the basis of price index.

In a statement here today BKU president Ajmer Singh Lakhowal and secretary general Manjit Singh Kadian observed that while hiking the MSP of different crops as recommended by the Agricultural Costs and Prices Commission, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had completely overlooked the increased cost of inputs.

The prices of essential inputs like fertilisers, pesticides, diesel and labour had gone up by 20 to 30 per cent last year. The price of diesel was also raised four times during the same period.

Apprehending that the inadequate farm prices would wreak havoc on the agricultural economy, the BKU functionaries said the freezing of wheat MSP by the government coupled with unremunerative prices of other crops had led to a situation in which the farmers were being crushed under an unbearable debt burden and were even forced to commit suicides.

Mr Lakhowal and Mr Kadian reiterated the demand for refixation of wheat MSP and other rabi crops, taking the price index for 1966-67 as the basis for the same. The revised prices for different crops, they added, worked out to be Rs 988 per quintal for wheat, Rs 143 for sugarcane and Rs 2,860 for oilseeds.

‘Drishtikon’ — nature captured in camera
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, December 19
Lensmen T.P.S. Sandhu and Ranjodh Singh have tried to capture nature in their camera and have been quite successful. A photo exhibition on nature — Drishtikon-2003 — was inaugurated at Sundial Hall, Sutlej club, by Mr G.S.Aujla, Additional Director General Police, and Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, here today.

In the exhibition, “Love Nature — Be happy, healthy and holy”, more than 70 pieces of art are on display. The photograph, “One Family”, depicts a multi-colour bed of flowers. “Nature’s Classroom” displays different plants giving an impression of a classroom. A plane flies high in the sky in the photo “In search of God”. In “Inner beauty”, “Endless beauty” and “Charming beauty”, nature has been depicted in its various forms.

“Jeevan Dhara” presents different hues and colours of falling water. “Pal do pal” shows a blue-colour bubble. “Zakhm” depicts a single “wounded” leaf stuck in thorny wires. In “Humsafar”, a Rajasthani labourer is accompanied by his lone companion — the camel.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, T.P.S. Sandhu said he was a compulsive nature-watcher. “I always try to discover the individual at the core level. I have made attempts to unfold the mystery of nature as well as the inherent potential for aesthetic creativity. I capture nature for myself, society, humankind”, he said.

Ranjodh Singh said he inherited creative potential from his father, Giani Bhagat Singh. “I am an extrovert in exploration and observation and an introvert in assimilation and composition”, he said. After seeing his work of art, one can say that he has an eye for colour and form, and sounds of nature. “It is all teamwork. My wife, Rajinder Kaur ‘Pinki’, gives suitable titles to my work,” he said.

T.P.S. Sandhu said small things also mattered in life. “Most of my pictures have been photographed in Leh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, etc. I have clicked some beautiful photographs in Ludhiana — the city which people find polluted. You have to record the beauty immediately, otherwise it may lose its charm”, he stressed.
