Indians made to toil on opening day

Hobart, December 19
The touring Indians had an indifferent start to their three-day cricket match against Australia ‘A’, who dominated the opening day at the picturesque Bellerive Oval here today.

The hosts won the toss and piled up a score of 311 for five in 74-odd overs before declaring their innings and gave an early jolt to the Indians by removing opener Sadagopan Ramesh in the remaining 13 overs.

India finished the day at 37 for one with Aakash Chopra and Deep Dasgupta at the crease on 12 and 18, respectively.

Ramesh (4) was dismissed when he took his eyes off a lifting delivery from Matt Nicholson and lobbed it in the gully region where Damien Wright took a neat catch.

Speedster Shaun Tait, whose pace is in the news in recent days, bowled a couple of overs but the pitch did not seem an ally to his kind of methods.

Earlier, Saurav Ganguly, who decided to play the match at the last moment, lost the toss and the home team was given a good start by openers Michael Hussey (67) and Chris Rogers (70). The duo put on 119 runs for the first wicket.

Then Martin Love, the Test hopeful further staked his claims with a strokeful knock of 94 which caught the attention of a smattering of spectators on a grayish, cold damp day at Bellerive Oval.

Love was neat in his footwork and did a bit of damage to left-arm spinner Murali Kartik’s figures with some lusty hitting, including a lofted straight drive which cleared the ground.

Kartik, introduced into attack only in the 40th over, was nagging in his first spell of nine overs for 23 runs but then suffered at the hands of the home batsmen.

Australia ‘A’ were given a great start by Hussey and Rogers who took the lunch at 114 for no loss.

Roger was reprieved on 50 by Ramesh when he drove at a widish half volley from captain Saurav Ganguly and the catch flew at gully.

India finally broke through at the total on 119 when Rogers fell to a catch behind the stumps off Ganguly’s bowling for 70, having batted for 127 minutes and faced 94 deliveries, hitting 10 fours.

Ashish Nehra was used only for 10 overs by Ganguly, who decided to play the match at the last minute, but took two batsmen out from the middle — Hussey, essaying a pull and offering a catch to Ganguly at mid-on and then off the last ball before tea, Brad Hodge was cleaned up for one.

Hussey batted for 225 minutes for his 67 runs, hitting six fours and a six from 158 deliveries.

Hodge, who had made a stunning 264 against the Indians for Victoria at the MCG in the opening match of the tour, lasted for 15 minutes and faced 15 balls as he could not come up with the slow nature of the pitch.

Despite the overhead cloud cover, the strip in the middle did not offer much pace or bounce to the bowlers and the visitors mostly toiled in unhelpful conditions.

Nehra was the pick of Indian bowlers with 2 for 33 from 10 overs.

Irfan Pathan was hit around for a few runs and Laxmipathy Balaji appeared a bowler whose confidence was at a low ebb. Not only did he concede 84 runs in his 18 overs, he overstepped the bowling crease nine times.

The Indian seamers did no good to their side’s cause by bowling as many as 17 no balls and three wides. Besides Balaji’s nine no balls, captain Ganguly bowled seven. Pathan, who went for 77 runs in his 22 overs, was responsible for all the wides.

After Ramesh’s departure in the third over with the Indian innings scoreboard reading five, Chopra and Dasgupta displayed some patience in negotiating the opposition pacers.

Chopra’s unbeaten 12 came in almost one hour and 35 balls while Dasgupta took 34 balls for his unfinished knock.

Rahul Dravid, who scored a career-best 233 and 72 not out to play a stellar role in India’s historic Test win in Adelaide, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan were rested for the match.

Ganguly's bowling praised

Hobart, December 19
Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who took the decision to play the three-day match against Australia 'A' at the last minute, came in for praise for his bowling by home team opener Chris Rogers here today.

"Actually, he (Ganguly) was the pick of the bowlers early on. Conditions suited him and he got more movement than other new ball bowlers," Rogers said after the first day's play which was dominated by the home team.

"He nipped the ball around both ways. We were conscious of watching him and in the end he got us," said Rogers, who made 70 off 94 balls before he edged Ganguly behind the stumps. — PTI

Buchanan’s scathing attack on team

Hobart, December 19
In a sensational attack on Australia’s star cricketers, their coach John Buchanan has accused them of letting sponsors, business interests and other external factors produce a “soulless” display against India in the second Test in Adelaide.

“Boys, I love each and every one of you but I am so disappointed with the soulless, un-baggygreen, immature performance today,” an emotional Buchanan hand-wrote letter to each player after his side collapsed to 196 all out on the fourth evening of the second Test.

“I love each and every one of you but like my own family, you thrill, you frustrate, you anger,” said the coach, adding, “I question, what progress have we made as a team, as individuals”.

Buchanan’s strong criticism of his players apparently came even before they lost to India. Subsequently they have been pilloried by the Australian media.

Buchanan wrote, “my feelings, while heightened by today’s inept display have everything to do with you as persons first, family men (for most of you) second and players third”.

“In the lead-up to this game and up till tonight, the issues that have dominated conversations, priorities and by definition (I may well be incorrect), your attention/focus/clarity-deal-making; sponsors; Tug’s (captain Steve Waugh) farewell to Adelaide; helmets; what the media is saying about you,” he said.

The letter talks of “sacrifice of self, sacrifice of family, sacrifice of money-making ventures and ultimately sacrifice to establishing the best legacy for Australian cricket”.

Buchanan has cited the example of Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer (JL) in guiding Australia to a famous victory against Pakistan in Hobart in 1999 and compared it with team’s spineless batting in Adelaide.

“About this time, four years ago in Hobart, Gilly and JL responded to a ‘no-win’ situation with courage, conviction, and a toughness of character and concentration that is the pure fabric of the Australian cricket team,” he said.

“Today the only similar response I saw was Willo (Brad Williams with an injured shoulder) bowling, batting, throwing and diving at mid-off! “What has happened in the interim?”

Buchanan said the players were letting “yourselves down seeking excuses rather than being totally responsible for your decisions”.

He wrote “I, like all the support staff, respect who you are and what you have achieved. We are always in awe of what you do”.

“We couldn’t wish for greater success to be bestowed on you as team, as individual cricketers, as people and as family men.”

He wrote of his belief that Australia could pull off a victory on the final day even though it collapsed in the second innings.

“I like you and our support team will believe to the final ball bowled we can win this game. However if the result does not go our way then we would expect to see the baggy green spirit ... the courae of Willo, Gilly, JL to be clearly on show to you all so that we march to the MCG and the SCG playing in the spirit,” he said.

Buchanan has implored to treat it as a “private letter obviously”.

“It’s disappointing if it found it’s way anywhere. It’s a matter between myself and the players, not just the players, the whole team. That would be my only comment.”

The letter said the players have elected “a tough road but good on you for choosing this path”. — PTI

Lee holds the key, says McGrath

Sydney, December 19
Australia’s injured fast bowler Glenn McGrath feels tearaway pacer Brett Lee would be the key to hosts’ series-levelling win in the third Test at Melbourne starting Boxing Day.

McGrath, who has been ruled out for the entire Test series with ankle problems, said Lee has had the measure of the Indian batsmen in the past and could do it again.

"Brett (Lee) made his debut against India (in 1999) ... hopefully he can go back to the form he showed there," McGrath told The Daily Telegraph.

"He really got stuck into them early on and I think the extra pace and extra bounce the Melbourne wicket offers will play a part for Australia," he added.

McGrath, Australia’s only fast bowler with more than 400 Test wickets, said ‘cutting off’ India’s scoring options was crucial to Kangaroos’ success.

"I think in the first innings (in the second Test at Adelaide) India did score quite quickly.

"That’s not to say we didn’t bowl well — you’ve got to give credit to India, they’re a pretty awesome batting lineup.

"I’d say just get back to the basics, try to build up a bit of pressure and try to cut the scoring options off India because they’re a side that love to score quickly," the fast bowler nicknamed Pigeon said.

"I’ve always said Australia is a team that plays well under pressure. Obviously we’ll have to lift another gear and I think we’re capable of doing it.

"We’ve shown in the past when the pressure is on us, we always come through. — PTI

Gillespie ruled out

SYDNEY: The Australian team suffered a further setback today when key fast bowler Jason Gillespie was ruled out of the crucial third cricket Test against India due to a right groin strain.

Gillespie suffered the injury on Tuesday during the final day of the second Test in Adelaide and did not take the field after lunch. India won the match by four wickets to go to the December 26 Test at Melbourne with a 1-0 lead.

The bowler said he was disappointed at missing the match but would now look towards being fully fit for the final Test of the series at Sydney on January 2.

“I knew I was doubtful, but once you find out you won’t play it hits you harder than you realise,” he was quoted as saying by an Australian website.

“It’s now a case of getting things right for the rest of the summer as we have plenty of cricket left to play.”

Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott said the bowler was asked to miss the match so that he could be fit on time for the final Test. — PTI

Harbhajan has surgery

HOBART: Harbhajan Singh successfully underwent an operation in his bowling hand this morning and later said he was in “good spirits” and looking forward to returning to action soon.

“I’m in good spirits. It’s over and done with. I can now look forward to recovery,” Harbhajan told PTI moments after operation was performed on him by Dr Greg Hoy this morning.

Harbhajan said the x-rays of his hand before the operation and after it was done showed a great deal of clearance of floating tissues and torn ligaments.

“The surgeon has removed the tissues and stitched the ligament,” said the off-spinner, as he watched his team-mates in action against Australia ‘A’ in a three-day match on television. — PTI

Stephen Fleming hits unbeaten century

Hamilton, December 19
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming cracked his sixth Test century as New Zealand built a solid base to be 295 for six at stumps on the opening day of the first cricket Test against Pakistan here today.

Showing no evidence of the abdominal strain that had troubled him for the past month, Fleming scored freely to all points of the ground to be unbeaten on 125 including 20 boundaries.

Although Pakistan fought their way back into the match with four wickets in the final session it was not the start they expected when Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and relished having New Zealand bat on what had the hallmarks of a bowlers’ track.

Even though there was a green tinge on the pitch and scattered clouds overhead, the conditions did not hold the expected fears for the New Zealand batsmen who were assisted by a flood of no balls and the late withdrawal of the tourists’ trump card, Shoaib Akhtar.

Lou Vincent was out early with the score at 16, but the arrival of Fleming at the crease saw New Zealand take charge.

He started cautiously before ripping three boundaries in one over from Shabbir Ahmed and then going on to feature in century partnerships with Mark Richardson and then Scott Styris.

Richardson reached 44 before he authored his own dismissal.

JCT take on Dempo in NFL today
Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 19
Another interesting duel is on the cards as Goa's Dempo Sports Club lock horns with Punjab's JCT Phagwara in the fifth round of the eighth National Football League at Ludhiana's Guru Nanak Stadium tomorrow.

Currently placed third with 10 points from three victories and one draw, Dempo will be relying on Liberian striker Sunday Seah, who has the unique quality of performing a dual role. He is not only an asset in the attack but also acts as the goalkeeper when the situation demands. In fact he first came into the Indian circuit as a goalkeeper for FC Kochin and later donned the striker's mantle. In the current league, he has already demonstrated his prowess as a forward by scoring goals against Indian Bank and Haywards. It was Seah's goal that clinched victory for Dempo against Haywards at Goa on December 16. Assisting Seah upfront will be former internationals RC Prakash and Francis Silveira and dashing medio Samir Naik. Silveira still maintains his magic touch and was responsible for salvaging a 1-1 draw against Kolkata's Tollygunge Agragami on December 6. Another player to watch will be forward Raju Singh, who along with Clifford Miranda and Mohammed Gafari can upset the calculations of well- known outfits.

JCT, who stunned Goa's star outfit Salgaocar SC 1-0 in their previous tie on December 14, will seek to capitalise on home conditions once again. Leading the charge will be international IM Vijayan and Nigerian striker Stephen Abarowei with international Joe Paul Ancheri marshalling the midfield. JCT also have a sound defence manned by stopper backs Musa Aliu and KV Dhanesh. Goalkeeper Mansuru Mohammed will once again be the cynosure of all eyes after his praiseworthy performance against Salgaocar. Right winger Jaswinder Singh, medio Ram Pal, and forward Charanjit Kumar are also seasoned campaigners who have justified the confidence reposed in them by coaches Sukhwinder Singh and Parminder Singh.

Last year, Dempo finished sixth in the NFL with 35 points while JCT were fourth with 38 points. Incidentally JCT had lost both the home and away ties against Dempo in the seventh NFL. While JCT lost the away match 0-1, the home tie at Ludhiana ended in a 1-3 defeat. However, the scene has changed drastically ever since and the mill men hope to reverse the trend this year.

Trailing 0-1 till the 89th minute of the Salt Lake stadium match, the Goans first equalised through S A Firoze before their ace striker Yusif Yakuba scored the winner three minutes into injury time to ensure full points for the visitors.

After five matches Churchill now have 10 points while Sporting continued to be precariously positioned with only a solitary point in their kitty.

Earlier, after a barren first session Sporting went into the lead into the 56th minute when Edeh Chidih netted a rebound.

A Syed Rahim Nabi centre was headed by Dipendu Biswas and the ball struck the post and came back into play. Chidih, lurking nearby, placed in.

Sporting playing the first match under new coach Jamshed Nassiri, played dearly for withdrawing into a defensive coccoon after scoring the goal.

Churchill increased their stranglehood as time went on, and the Sporting defense gave way in the closing stages unable to bear the constant onslaught. — PTI

Sharan stuns Sridhar, enters final
M.S. Unnikrishnan

New Delhi, December 19
In a remarkable turnaround, wild card Divij Sharan of Delhi dethroned top seed and defending champion Vinod Sridhar of Tamil Nadu 7-6, (7-5), 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) to setup the men’s singles title clash against second-seeded Punna Vishal of Andhra Pradesh in the DSCL Open National Tennis Championship at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association deco-turf court here today.

Punna Vishal quelled the challenge of sixth-seeded Kamala Kannan of Tamil Nadu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the other semi-final. Chandigarh girl Shruti Dhawan, the fifth seed, fell at the semi-final hurdle when she was ousted by fourth-seed Ankita Bhambri 7-5, 6-3.

The women’s final will be a family affair between two Delhi girls as wild card Sanaa Bhambri shocked seventh-seeded Samrita Sekhar of Tamil Nadu 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Shruti Dhawan must own up the blame for her defeat as she became a victim of her own error. Ankit Bhambri did not play great tennis, but she succeeded in making Shruti Dhawan spray the ball over, except where it was intended and eventually got entrapped in her own follies.

Shruti Dhawan’s reach, and her serve and volley game should have helped her progress into the challenge round, but that was not to be as she wilted under pressure in the second set, and lost out in a tame manner.

But the match of the day was the one between young boy Divij Sharan and Vinod Sridhar. Divij, who has also entered the boys under-18 final, beating Jeevan Nedunchezian 6-4, 6-4, proved a tough nut to crack for Sridhar, and eventually became his nemesis.

Sridhar’s tactics did not work with Divij, who got into the main draw of the men’s singles courtesy a wild card. And through his skill and craft, Divij proved to be a talent to be watched. He gave as much and more than what he got from Sridhar, as he excelled with his deft returns and fascinating serves. He hit some fine shots which left Sridhar gasping.

Though Divij hung on to win the first set in the tie-breaker shootout, his chances looked dim when Sridhar claimed the second set with an authoritative display. But Divij showed a lot of determination and court craft in the decisive third set to push Sridhar into a desperate corner, and after trading shot for shot to tie the score at 6-6, proved sharp shooter in the tie-breaker to clinch the set and the match, to create the biggest upset of the tournament.

Divij will have a good fight on hand when he takes on Punna Vishal in the title clash as the latter too is a crafty player, who had to use his skills deftly to overcome the athletic and fighting Kamala Kannan.

In the boys under-18 final too, Divij Sharan will run into a tough opponent in Navdeep Singh. The Dubai-based Navdeep outlasted third-seeded Saurabh Kohli of Maharashtra in an acrimonious contest at 6-1, 5-7, 7-6, (14-12).

In the girls under-18 semi-finals, Punam S Reddy of Hyderabad beat Sanaa Bhambri 1-6,7-6, (7-5), 7-6, (8-6) while Madura Ranganathan of Tamilnadu defeated Parul Goswami of Delhi 6-3, 7-5.

Scott accomplished the feat 22 months after the race when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) stripped Russia’s Olga Danilova of her gold medal in the 5 km event at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics after a series of doping rulings on Thursday. “To say I’m an Olympic gold medallist now is the greatest honor,” Scott told a media teleconference from Ramsaw, Austria. — Reuters
