300 attend health awareness camp

Chandigarh, December 20
More than 300 persons attended a health awareness camp organised by the Servants of the People Society in collaboration with Municipal Corporation, at Mauli Jagran Colony. The camp was organised under Swaranjayanti Shehari Rozgar Yojna of the MC to create awareness on drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and other health related issues. The volunteers from the Social Welfare and Adult Education department also helped in organising the camp. A team from Yuva Jagriti Manch, presented a street play, highlighting the importance of healthy lifestyle, importance of a clean environment and the harmful effect of drugs, smoking and alcohol.

41 labourers examined at camp

Panchkula, December 20
As part of the AIDS awareness programme, Yuvsatta in association with the UT AIDS Control Society organised a free medical check-up camp for migrant labourers at the Jail Road, Colony Number 5, here today.

About 150 persons attended the camp and 41 were examined and treated for various ailments like sexually transmitted diseases.

Mehar Academy triumph

Chandigarh, December 20
Mehar Academy, Kurali, outplayed Government High School, Sector 26, 2-0 in the Ist Kanwar Harbans Lal Memorial Football Tournament played here today at the Sector 17 Football Stadium.

Both the teams could not score till half time. It was Devinder Singh who scored the first goal in 38th minute followed by Ajay Singh who struck in 58th minute. Ajay Singh was also adjudged the man-of-the-match.

Cricket tourney

Quark Media House outplayed Strategic Marketing by nine wickets in the inaugural tie of the CRY Cadence Corporate Cricket Challenge Tournament which began here today at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium.

Quark dominated in all departments of the game. Strategic Marketing was bowled out for 77 runs. In reply, Quark players achieved the target in 11th over losing only one wicket in the process. Sanjeev Gupta was declared the man-of-the-match. The tournament is organised to raise resources for the underprivileged children.

Sunil Dutt wins gold

On the second day of the ongoing National Taekwondo Championship played here at the Skating Rink, Sector 10, Sunil Dutt of Chandigarh bagged gold medal in light weight Black Belt category. Various winners in different events included Reeta, Sonu, Neeraj, Kamal Joshi, Krishna, Shubhant and Honey.

Badminton meet

Ajay Bajaj of Hindustan Times and Gautam Dheer of Indian Express made it to the final of the men’s singles event on the opening day of the Inter-Media Badminton Tournament played here today at the Panjab University Gymnasium Hall.

Semi-finals: Gautam b Rajinder Chawla 21-9, Ajay Bajaj b Rajiv Raghunath 21-10.

LIC XIin last four

LIC XI and United India XI made it to the semi-final of the Canara Bank Cup Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament played here at Panchkula.

Brief scores: LIC XI: 218 runs for two in 25 overs (Narinder walia 128 n.o., Amrinder Singh 48,Vaneet Chawla 37, Dharam Deepak 3 2 for 30); PFC XI: 162 runs for eight (Manoj Kumar 43, Pankaj 32, Munish Gupta 28, Sushil 23, Jagdish Kumar 3 for 27, Inderjit 3 for 2, TP Singh 2 for 10).

In the second quarterfinal, an unbeaten knock of 94 runs in just 62 deliveries with 12 fours and two sixes by Sanjay Bhatia enabled United India Assurance Company in beating Education Department, Chandigarh, by 27 runs to enter the semi-final.

Hardware shop raided by ST officials

Mohali, December 20
Officials of the mobile wing of the Punjab Sales Tax Department raided a hardware shop in Phase IX here today. The account books being maintained by the owners in the shop were impounded to ascertain tax evasion if any.

The raid, started at about 3p.m. and continued till 5pm. Stating that they had secret information about the showroom, Haryana Sanitation, dealing in paint and hardware, the sales tax officials said the showroom owners did not even have the account books in the shop which was an offence in itself.

SP rejoins duty

Mr Ranbir Singh Sharma today joined back as Superintendent of Police after completing a training course. In his absence, Mr Mohammad Akil, Superintendent of Police, Ambala, had been holding additional charge as SP, Panchkula.

Mr Sharma today held a meeting with senior cops and took stock of the investigations in the triple murder of Aroras. He reportedly visited the site of crime in Sector 4 along with other police officials.

The SP is learnt to have expressed his desire to meet the Arora family, as well as the brothers of victim Parveen, who had alleged that the sons of Dr KL Arora — Mr Subhash and Dr Vinod — were behind the murder. Mr Sharma said that till now the police had booked the Aroras only on the basis of suspicion, and he said that the police would work on other theories behind the murder.
