Our Sports Reporter

Ludhiana, December 26
Top seed Kanwarjeet of Jalandhar was held by Chetan Bansal of Moga the on the second day of the Punjab State Open Chess Tournament being played at R.S. Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar here today. The third round match between these two players was a well-fought encounter as both the players were well versed with the classic Guicco-Pino opening and tried hard to get past an upper hand in the game. After the middle game, Chetan had an extra pawn but could not convert the advantage into a win as time ran out and they had to settle for a draw.

However, the most keen tussle was witnessed in the match played between Neeraj Khera of Jalandhar and Moti Ram of Patiala. Moti Ram opened the game with an unorthodox Stone-Wall opening with whilte pieces but Neeraj defended very well for about two hours and in a tactical playout was able to retain one extra Bishop which won the game for him.

DC asked to fix criteria for school admission
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, December 26
With admission time for Nursery, LKG and UKG classes close at hand, the anxious parents are worried as no one knows what criteria is employed by the various schools for admission. Is it money, influence or whims of the school authorities? The president of the Ludhiana Action Committee, Mr Rakesh Verma and the secretary general, Mr Kimti Rawal, have sent a telegram to Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, requesting him to fix a criteria for admission.

They alleged that money was the main criteria for admission to most of the top schools in the city. Deserving and intelligent students fail to get admission in these schools as their parents fail to pay hefty donations. They said every year as many as 4,000 students apply for new admissions but each school selects around 250 students. It is a well known fact that on average donation of Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh per student is charged by certain schools. By the end of admission seasons, the schools are richer by crores. Undeserving students get admission while the deserving ones are left out.

Members of the Ludhiana Action Group say,” Our main demand is that a criteria must be fixed for the admissions like a open lottery system or a legislation should be there like, some other states and all admissions should be banned till further order.”
