Despite 10 gastroenteritis deaths, potable water eludes residents

Chit fund owner, family disappear after duping people
Amritsar, June 9
A large number of investors were left high and dry when owner of Subline Chit Fund Company, Kulwant Singh Nagi, along with his family, disappeared after duping people of crores of rupees. Nagi allegedly fled from the city following a complaint by retired CBI Inspector, Mr Ranjit Singh Nanda, who expressed apprehension over the intention of the conman.

Tempers rise as auction gets cancelled midway

Sudden arrival of a fax message by the Local Bodies Department led to the cancellation of auction of shops by the improvement trust here today. Tempers rose as the announcement of cancellation was made after two shops had come under the hammer while auction for the third was in process.

1 dead, 5 hurt as shell explodes in welding shop

One person was killed and five were injured, two of them seriously, when an explosion took place in a welding shop in Model House locality here today. A scrap dealer had brought a discarded gun shell to peel off brass out of it.

450 await pension: Dang

Mr Satya Pal Dang, a Communist leader, has alleged that 450 beneficiaries of old-age, widow and handicapped pensions have not been paid for a period ranging from six months to three years.

Flood control rooms would be set up at the tehsil level in the district under the supervision of respective Tehsildars and district level main flood control room would be set up here and these would be functional from July 1. The district drainage department and the Health Department should complete all necessary arrangements for tackling floods, said Mr S.K. Ahluwalia, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a meeting of the Flood Protection Arrangement Committee here today.

PSEB staff protest against Power Bill

Members of the Punjab State Electricity Board Employees Federation staged a dharna and organised a rally in protest against the Power Bill, 2003, here today. VB opposes Sukhbir’s plea on US visit

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau today opposed the application of Mr Sukhbir Badal seeking permission to go to USA for medical treatment. Mr Sukhbir Badal, earlier in a application moved in the special court Ropar, had sought permission to go to USA. Mr Sukhbir had pleaded before the court that he had an appointment with the doctor in USA on June 13. 

Tricycles given to disabled
Bathinda, June 9
Forty-five physically challenged persons were given tricycles, seven were given wheelchairs and 32 received callipers at a free camp organised by the local Helping Hand Educational Society at Akalia Jalal village in the district on Sunday. Ms Paramjit Kaur Gulshan, MP, inaugurated the camp.

Ayurvedic camp in Muscat

Foreign nationals as well as NRIs turned up in large number and showed keen interest in the first ever ayurvedic camp organised in Muscat, Oman, by the AMTC group of hospitals. Dr Anil Garg, an ayurvedic specialist, working as Ayurvedic Medical Officer at Railon village in district, said majority of patients were cured.

The Faridkot District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum has held a midwife guilty of negligence and directed her to pay a compensation to the extent of Rs 25,000 to a Abohar woman Neelam Rani, besides Rs 7,000 as medicine expenses incurred by the latter.

Loan officer held on defaulter’s complaint
Anandpur Sahib, June 9
The Vigilance Department yesterday arrested the loan officer of Punjab National Bank on a complaint by a defaulter, Mr Tarsem Lal. Following a decree against his land, Mr Tarsem Lal entered into an agreement with the bank following which the decree was held in abeyance.
