SEMINAR: On the concluding day of a one-month-long campaign for the eradication of malaria, a health awareness seminar was organised by the Primary Health Centre at Bhadson village, near here, on Tuesday. Dr Surjit Kaur Sandhu, Assistant Health Officer, Patiala, was the chief guest. Mr Bahadur Singh Aujla, block extension educator, talked about the increasing number of drug addicts in the country. Dr Sharanjit Kaur, Mr Amar Singh, Assistant Unit Officer, and Mr Gobind Singh also spoke.

Killed: Gurusharan Singh (58), son of Mr Harchar Singh, was killed at Chehlan village, 3 km from here, on Tuesday, when a Maruti Zen hit Gursharan Singh. On a statement of Mr Jaswinder Singh, brother of the deceased, the Amloh police has registered an FIR against Jaswinder Singh, under Sections 279, 304-A, IPC. According to Mr Vasdev ASI, the police has impounded the car, but the driver escaped.

CLASS IV STAFF: A special session of Class IV employees of various departments was held here on Tuesday. Mr Hari Chand, Mr Mukhtiar Singh, Mr Jaspal Singh Gadahera and Babu Singh Maira participated in the session. 

ELECTED: The following were elected office-bearers of Amloh tehsil: president — Som Nath (Municipal Council); secretaries — Surjit Singh (Education) and Amar Singh (Irrigation); senior vice-president — Lal Singh (SDM Office); cashier — Gurmeet Singh (Irrigation); vice-president — Joginder Lal (Health); auditor — Gurdev Singh (PWD) and organising secretary — Om Prakash (Warehouse).

ELECTED: Prof Jai Rup Singh, Dean, academic affairs and coordinator Centre for Genetic Disorders of Guru Nanak Dev University, has been elected ‘Fellow’ of International Medical Sciences Academy (IMSA). The scroll of the prestigious fellowship would be conferred on Prof Jai Rup at the convocation being held during IMSACON 2004 at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA from July 9-11.

MAN SHOT: Mr Baldev Singh, a resident of Sadhpur village was shot at and injured by Mr Atma Singh and Mr Rassal Singh both residents of the same village on Monday evening. The Bhikhiwind police has registered a case under Sections 307, 34 of the IPC and the Arms Act.

WOMAN POISONED: Mrs Baljinder Kaur (20) a resident of Dhigana village falling under the Patti police station was allegedly poisoned to death by her husband and in-laws. The Patti police has registered a case, under Sections 304B and 34 of the IPC, against the accused who are said to be absconding.

Blood Donor Day: The All-India Medical Laboratory Technologists Association (AIMLTA) would commemorate the World Blood Donor Day by holding a blood donation camp on June 14. The World Blood Donor Day is being observed to mark the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Karl Landsteiner. As a part of the celebrations, the AIMLTA would also release a special commemorative postage cover.

TRANSFERRED: Mr S.C. Dhall has been posted as manager of the main branch of State Bank of Patiala at Kalka. Earlier, Mr Dhall was in Specialised Personal Banking branch in Sector 8.

BOOKS AVAILABLE: A spokesman of Haryana School Education Board said that syllabus books for class IX and XII and all application forms were available in plenty at board’s syllabus book store and there was no shortage of books and forms. The spokesman further told that the board has introduced a credit transfer scheme under Haryana Open School for the benefit of those students who have failed in the matric or higher secondary examinations for have lost their final chance of compartment under regular schooling system.

TWO ARRESTED: The police has arrested two persons in connection with the kidnapping of a five-year-old boy Golu who had allegedly been kidnapped for ransom from Dharuhera on June 3. A case of abduction for ransom and wrongful confinement under Section 364-A, 368, 34 of the IPC has been registered against them.

RAPE ACCUSED HELD: Jai Ram Yadav, a resident of Mohanpur village in Rewari district, who had gone into hiding after allegedly raping his neighbour’s wife on June 3, was arrested by the police on Tuesday. A case of rape and house trespass under Section 376, 450 of the IPC was registered against him. The police also got the victim medically examined which confirmed the rape.

THREE ARRESTED: The police has arrested three persons and seized four bags of poppy husk in two different raids. According to the district police chief the police carried out raids during the night in the area. At a check post near Mattar village the police stopped a Maruti car and recovered three bags of poppy husk from it. The police arrested the car driver. In another raid the police arrested two persons and found a bag of poppy husk from their possession.

WARRANTS ISSUED: The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr A D Gaur, on Tuesday issued warrants against Mr Arun Kapur, a former Director of Atlas Cycle Industries Limited, Sonepat, following his failure to appear before the court on the date of hearing in the case filled by the police.

DEMONSTRATION: Employees of the Irrigation Department held a demonstration in front of the office of the Executive Engineer, Rai Water Service Division here on Tuesday in protest against the rejection of their demands which included promotion on seniority and fixing the salary of the telephone attendants.

SUICIDE: A 25 year-old youth, Satish allegedly committed suicide by taking celphos tablets in his house in Malviya Nagar here on Wednesday. The reason behind his suicide was stated to be a family quarrel.

HP JOURNALISTS’ DEMAND: The Himachal Pradesh State Journalists Federation, has demanded that in view of increasing threats to the journalists, the state government should enact a law for their protection. The federation president, Mr Jaikumar, while addressing the executive committee meeting of the federation said, threats to journalists had become the order of the day. He urged the Chief Minister to allocate a sum of Rs 10 lakh for the journalists welfare fund.

TEACHERS’ UNION: Mr Ramesh Sharma and Mr Rajender Kumar have been elected president and general secretary respectively of the district unit of the Himachal Government Teachers Union.

SELF-EMPLOYMENT: The District Commissioner, Mr A.R. Rizvi while presiding over a meeting here on Tuesday, said, a sum of Rs 3.30 crore would be spent on generation of self-employment in the district. A sum of Rs 6 lakh had been utilised for the purpose and 18, 360 man days had been generated.
