OPD wing opens tomorrow

Ludhiana, June 30
With a view to providing latest medical facilities to patients, Gurdev Hospital here has been modernised with a hi-tech emergency wing and an air-conditioned out patient department (OPD) having been added to the hospital.

Mr R.C. Dogra, Health and Family Welfare Minister, Punjab, would inaugurate the new wings at a special function on Saturday.

Giving more details, Dr S.S. Grewal, Director of the hospital, said to improve the quality of services in surgery, plastic surgery and medicine in the hospital and two renowned doctors — Dr Waheguru Pal Singh Sidhu, former medical superintendent, and Head of Surgery and Plastic Surgery Department at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, and Dr Harkamal Sidhu, former head of Medicine Department at the GTBH — had joined the hospital.

Dr Grewal said the management had also decided to impart quality services to patients suffering from various heart ailments.

He claimed that with the joining of some more committed doctors, the hospital would be able to serve the people in a better way.

Gursharan is IMA national vice-president

Dr Gursharan Singh, district president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), has been elected national vice-president of the association. The results of the election were declared recently in New Delhi.

The local unit of the IMA today congratulated Dr Singh on his election and hoped he would continue to serve the medical community with the same zeal and enthusiasm.

At a meeting held here, unit members thanked members of the IMA for voting for Dr Gursharan Singh.

Expressing his gratitude to the members, Dr Singh promised to ensure that interests of the medical community were not compromised at any cost. He said he would feel more responsible and committed to the cause of the medical community across the country.

There are four vice-presidents in the IMA, representing northern, southern, eastern and western zones. Dr Grusharan Singh will be representing the northern zone.

City youth carries Olympic torch in Switzerland

It was a matter of honour for Ludhianavis that a person belonging to the city got an opportunity to carry the Olympic torch in Switzerland. Puneet Gupta hails from Kothi Megh Singh, Ludhiana. His parents are living in the city.

He got this opportunity on June 24 in Lausame, Switzerland. Puneet, who was brought up in Ludhiana, studied at Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Ludhiana. He did IIT in Delhi and later joined Schlumberger, a renowned oil company, as an IT consultant in Texas, USA. He worked with the company in several countries. He was chosen for this honour by the American company from among its 50,000 employees.

Puneet's father, Mr Suresh Gupta, a businessman, and his mother, Ms Mala Gupta, said, ''We are grateful to the Almighty, who has blessed our family with such a moment. I knew he was very intelligent and would touch heights. But I have never imagined such a moment. When I saw my son carrying the Olympic torch, I could not control my tears.''

Mr Suresh Gupta sad their family was provided complimentary air tickets to Switzerland on the occasion.

"We had sent Puneet's uncle, Mr Subash Gupta, Income Tax Commissioner, Ludhiana, and his wife, Ms Sushma Gupta, to Switzerland. They watched and enjoyed the moments of happiness there and we did so here through television and the Internet," added Mr Suresh.
