Ludhiana, July 3
The Indira Gandhi National Open University regional centre at the ITI building Bulepur, Khanna, Ludhiana, organised the ninth Annual Prof G. Ram Reddy Memorial Lecture at its regional centre in Khanna yesterday.
Prof G. Madhavan Nayar, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), who spoke from IGNOU’s electronic media production centre at University HQs in New Delhi delivered the lecture. Staff members, students and teachers of neighbouring institutions of Khanna town attended the programme at the centre.
Prof G. Ram Reddy was the founder Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU in whose memory this lecture is organised by IGNOU every year.
Dr Umesh Chandra Pandey, Regional Director of IGNOU for Punjab and Chandigarh, said it was a nationwide event in which apart from the regional centre of Punjab and Chandigarh, other regional centres of IGNOU in different parts of the country also participated and interacted with Prof Madhavan Nayyar, Chairman ISRO. The ISRO Chairman spoke about “Development of space programmes and its impact on education”.
Prof Nayyar said IGNOU and ISRO’s collaborative efforts to disseminate education had made significant impact. It was also emphasised that with the launching of “EDUSAT” next month, a dedicated satellite for education, open and distance learning systems in India will get a further boost. IGNOU is expected to play a leading role in the further expansion of open and distance learning system with the launching of “EDUSAT”.
Dr Pandey said with the further strengthening of ties between ISRO and IGNOU, the student support services network of IGNOU in Punjab would benefit the distance learners of the region. Dr Pandey also said that the university had plans to further expand the network of its support services in the region keeping in view the new capabilities that will be available soon.
