10-day NSS camp concludes

Doraha, July 6
A 10-day NSS camp for girls of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, concluded here yesterday. Seventy-five volunteers participated.
During the camp a team of doctors and scientists of Punjab Agricultural University educated the volunteers and farmers from nearby areas. Dr C.S. Malhi of the Zoology and Fisheries Department, PAU, gave a detailed lecture of bird management and suggested ways and means by which their attack on fields could be checked. Dr Neena Singla, an expert in rodent control, suggested the system to control the onslaught of rats on the fields. Dr Parminder Singh spoke on floriculture and Dr Daljit Singh Khurana shared his views on the plantation, preservation and yield from various types of vegetable crops. Dr Bhagwant Singh Chahel, an expert from PAU, too delivered a lecture on horticulture and its uses to the farmers in particular and community in general. Dr Pardeep Chhuneja spoke on bee-keeping. He, too, discussed on the natural behaviour and instincts common among the bee-community and the rich dividends they ensure to the keepers.

Ms Usha Chopra, a representative of the Red Cross Society, Ludhiana, stressed on the significance of first aid. She discussed about various fractures and wounds caused due to electric shocks, snake-bite and accidents. She gave a practical demonstration of the different methods to be adopted at the time of dressing of particular type of wounds and fractures and also the process of artificial respiration. She stressed upon the need of blood and the qualities of a blood donor.

Yoga lessons were given by Mr Paramjit Singh, Ms Sarabjit Kaur and Ms Sucheela Rani.

Besides, different competitions like mehandi application, pot decoration, fabric painting, poster and chart making and embroidery were organised. In the mehandi competition, Jaspreet was declared first, Gagandeep Kaur second and Daljit Kaur third. In pot decoration and fabric painting, Jatinder Kaur was first and Premdeep Kaur was declared second. In the poster and chart making, the winners were Rajanpreet, Maninderpal and Mamta and in the embroidery, Kamaljit, Inderjit and Amandeep secured first, second and third positions, respectively.

New Principal for Shanti Tara College

Ludhiana, July 6
Mr Gurjant Singh was appointed Principal of Master Shanti Tara College, Ahmedgarh, yesterday. Earlier, he was the Vice-Principal of Sher Gill Memorial College, Mukandpur College. Mr Gurjant Singh said he would try to fulfill the objectives of the president of the college, Mr Prem Singh, and its general secretary, Mr Ashok Malhotra.

Members congratulated the Principal and were hopeful that he would take initiative to spread education in and around Malerkotla, besides catering to the needs of rural students.

Coordination panel: A coordination committee, comprising staff members of Shanti Tara College, 45 panchs and sarpanchs and heads of other educational institutions, was formed in Ahmedgarh. The chief guest, Mr Arvind Malhotra, said the committee would provide educational facility for poor girls, besides improving the educational infrastructure in the rural areas.

MBBS topper: Bhuvnesh Aggarwal, a student of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, has done the city proud by getting selected as one of the 33 candidates in the MBBS course of the AIIMS, New Delhi. He is the only one to have been selected from Ludhiana district in this course and has got the 12th rank at the national level.

He also made it to the final selection team of Biology Olympiad this year in the examination conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in association with the CBSE.

Eurokids: Eurokids, a pre-school run by Egmont Imagination India Ltd which is part of Egmont International Holdings, Denmark, has opened its branch here. After Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Amritsar and Muktsar, this is the fifth branch of Eurokids in Punjab, taking its umber to seven in the Punjab and Haryana region.

The Principal KVM, Mr S.C. Saxena, inaugurated the Ludhiana branch on Tuesday. The school has a playschool and nursery class to ensure quality education for children between the age groups of two and four years. The classes are theme-based and are air-conditioned.

Admission rush: There is a great rush for admission specially for IT and fashion and textile designing courses at Master Tara Singh Memorial College.

Most of the students said they were not sure whether they would get admission in Delhi where the cutoff percentage was high.

Dr S S Johl honoured by PAU

Ludhiana, July 6
An impressive function was held at PAU here today to honour Dr S. S. Johl on his receiving the Padma Bhushan.
Presiding over the function, the Vice- Chancellor, Dr K. S. Aulakh, said the award was a great honour and was the result of Dr Johl's transparent thinking, policies in favour of the public and hard work which were source of inspiration to all. On a personal note, he said Dr Johl had been the source of inspiration for him since 1962 and he was proud to be a student of Dr Johl.

Dr Aulakh honoured Dr Johl by presenting him with a shawl, a bouquet and a silver plate.

Dr Johl said "PAU is just like a mother to me and this honour is a symbol of a mother's affection for her son. " He said he was equally happy when he was granted the fellowship of the Punjabi Sahit Academy, Ludhiana.

He also recalled a poem he used to read in his childhood which was a great source of courage and inspiration to him. This poem underlined the need for facing difficulties in one's life. One should find solutions and tread the path leading to success. In a message to all scientists, he said that they should work hard throughout their lives. Dr Johl said he was proud of his students who were working hard in order to achieve their goals.
