10-day NSS camp concludes

A 10-day NSS camp for girls of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, concluded here yesterday. Seventy-five volunteers participated.
During the camp a team of doctors and scientists of Punjab Agricultural University educated the volunteers and farmers from nearby areas. Dr C.S. Malhi of the Zoology and Fisheries Department, PAU, gave a detailed lecture of bird management and suggested ways and means by which their attack on fields could be checked. Dr Neena Singla, an expert in rodent control, suggested the system to control the onslaught of rats on the fields. Dr Parminder Singh spoke on floriculture and Dr Daljit Singh Khurana shared his views on the plantation, preservation and yield from various types of vegetable crops. Dr Bhagwant Singh Chahel, an expert from PAU, too delivered a lecture on horticulture and its uses to the farmers in particular and community in general. Dr Pardeep Chhuneja spoke on bee-keeping. He, too, discussed on the natural behaviour and instincts common among the bee-community and the rich dividends they ensure to the keepers.Ms Usha Chopra, a representative of the Red Cross Society, Ludhiana, stressed on the significance of first aid. She discussed about various fractures and wounds caused due to electric shocks, snake-bite and accidents. She gave a practical demonstration of the different methods to be adopted at the time of dressing of particular type of wounds and fractures and also the process of artificial respiration. She stressed upon the need of blood and the qualities of a blood donor. Yoga lessons were given by Mr Paramjit Singh, Ms Sarabjit Kaur and Ms Sucheela Rani. Besides, different competitions like mehandi application, pot decoration, fabric painting, poster and chart making and embroidery were organised. In the mehandi competition, Jaspreet was declared first, Gagandeep Kaur second and Daljit Kaur third. In pot decoration and fabric painting, Jatinder Kaur was first and Premdeep Kaur was declared second. In the poster and chart making, the winners were Rajanpreet, Maninderpal and Mamta and in the embroidery, Kamaljit, Inderjit and Amandeep secured first, second and third positions, respectively.
