Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, July 10
Dr Neena Dhanda, who teaches philosophy at the University of Wotverhampton, England, believes that women in India necessarily need to be provided 33 per cent reservation in Parliament and other legislative bodies. She said, similar reservation was given to women in Norway and Denmark also. In fact in Norway 40 per cent of the seats in the country’s parliament were reserved for women.

Dr Neena Dhanda, who is an alumni of the local Government College for Women and the Panjab University, Chandigarh, from where she did her Masters in Philosophy, does not agree that once power is given to women they are not able to exercise it. She said, over a period of time women have started asserting themselves in every sphere.

Dr Neena Dhanda is the Head of the Department of Philosophy in the University of Wotverhampton. She said, she was one of the three women heads among about 120 departments of philosophy in various universities in England. Her focus mainly remains on the political philosophy.

She was here yesterday. She also delivered a lecture in the Department of Philosophy in the Panjab University. She has done her PhD in feminist and moral philosophy. Currently she is working on empowerment of women in India.

She has done extensive research on women empowerment in context of the reservation provided to women in panchayats and other local bodies in India.

The woman philosopher observed that it was a worldwide phenomenon that women enjoyed less power than men. She disagreed that participation of women in the political process was substantially low. “The very fact that they vote means that they are participating in the process, how can you say that their participation is low”, she asked.

She maintained that the women had been found acting independently when it came to voting for a particular candidate or a party. Quoting various researches conducted in India, she said, it had been found that most women who vote, vote of their own choice and for the candidate or the party of their own liking.
