Ludhiana, July 10
Christian Medical College and Hospital, in its endeavour to reach out to the masses, has decided to provide medical services to the people in the remote areas of Lahaul and Spiti. The CMCH, Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Simla Sanitarium and Hospital and government of Himachal Pradesh, organised a six days multi-specialty camp at Kaza.

A team of gynecologist, surgeons, anesthetists from the CMCH joined with the eye, dental and nursing professionals of Simla Sanitarium for the camp.

About 2000 patients were given free medical treatment under various specialities like, gynaecology (203 patients), surgery (128 patients), eye (602 patients), dental (170 patients) and general medicine (581 patients). A total number of 50 major surgeries were performed, comprising of 24 gynae surgeries.

For a total population of about 15,000, there are a very few public health centres in the entire Lahaul and Spiti region. The major challenge the district hospital faces is the lack of healthcare personnel. The hostile climatic conditions are largely responsible for doctors abandoning their posts of duty here.

Hence, patients requiring surgery, are often referred to the Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, which takes about 25 to 26 hours for one to reach from Kaza to Shimla. “The CMCH aims at providing the required treatment at their doorstep”, the hospital spokesman claimed.

Dr John Abraham, Medical Superintendent, the CMCH, said four more such camps would be planned by the end of this year.
