Guwahati/Patna, July 10
Floods continued to ravage the eastern and north-eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar and North Bengal today, having claimed 56 lives and affected more than 2.7 million people in the four states so far.
Official reports said 26 persons died in Bihar, followed by 25 in Assam and five in Arunachal Pradesh. Property worth crores of rupees had been damaged.
The situation in lower Assam worsened, snapping rail and road links, forcing the Indian Air Force and the Army to carry on rescue operation on a war footing, as the toll rose to 20.
In the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, all major rivers and their tributaries were in spate following week-long torrential rains. Five persons have died so far.
