Technique to detect eye disorders discussed

A national seminar on the technique of Fundus Flouroscein Angiography (FFA) was organised at Grewal Eye Institute here today. Describing the importance of the FFA technique, experts gathered from all over the country at the seminar said the problems of eyes like age-related muscular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy hypertension, occlusion of blood vessels, different inflammatory disorders of the eye and eye injuries were some of the conditions where the accurate diagnosis was possible only through the technique. In the technique, a photograph of the eye is taken first, then a dye is injected in the hand which reaches the eye in 10 minutes and photographic record of retina is made.

Dr P. N. Nagpal of Retina Foundation, Ahmedabad, discussed in detail the FFA in retinal venous occlusions. He said the obstruction to the retinal blood circulation is a stroke or the attack of the eye, which is similar to the heart attack or brain stroke. He said it occur in elderly persons, especially who are hypersensitive, and demonstrated the role of angiography in identifying the early complications and planning the treatment of vascular occlusions.

Dr R. V. Azad of AIIMS, New Delhi, spoke on the diagnosis and treatment of age-related muscular degeneration. He said the condition is quite common in elderly population in the country and the technique of the FFA would help in appropriate laser treatment.

Dr Amod Gupta, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, PGI, emphasised the role of the FFA in diabetic retinopathy. Giving a presentation at the seminar, Dr Gupta stressed that Flouroscein Angiography had changed the understanding of the diabetic retinopathy and had helped the patient of diabetes.

Blood donation camp today

Hotel Heritage, Sector 35, Chandigarh, along with Bhavan's Old students Society, is organising a blood donation camp in the hotel tomorrow from 9.30 am to 3 pm.

Mr Vipul Dua, organiser of the camp, said the blood would be used to help thalassaemics. Appealing the people to donate blood, he said 70 per cent of the 345 patients registered with the Chandigarh Thalassenia Welfare Association cannot afford treatment and face risk to life. The hotel has been organising such a camp for the past many years on July 12.

Held in collaboration with the PGI blood bank, last year the camp attracted 150 donors and this time 200 were expected, he said.Back

 

Balwant, Aashi win cycling races

Chandigarh, July 11
The Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association started its calendar of events with mountain bike cycling races, which were sponsored by Forest Hill Resort. Over 100 cyclists from different schools and colleges took part in the events in junior and senior categories.

Balwant Singh won the senior boys four-lap mass start cross-country event, beating national and Chandigarh champion Ajit Singh of GGDSD College, Sector 32. Aashi of Pandit Mohan Lal SD School won in the girls junior category.

The results: Four-lap cross-country mass start race for men: Balwant Singh, CCC-14, 1; Ajit Singh, GGDSDC-32, 2; Ajay Trehan, GGDSDC-32, 3. Two-lap cross-country mass start race for boys ( under 16): Kapil, KVS-29, 1; Rahul Anand, KVS-29, 2; Rohan Kakar, GMSSS-35, 3.

One-lap cross-country mass start race for girls ( under 16): Aashi, SDPS-32, 1; Sumanpreet, CLDAV-7, 2; Loveleen Kaur, SDPS-32, 3.

The association will conduct Chandigarh cycling road races on August 15 at Sukhna
Lake Club.

Dhindsa is CACA chief

Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, member of Parliament, was unanimously elected president of Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association by the general house yesterday. Mr Rakesh Mohindra was elected secretary for the second term. Mr J.S. Negi, DSO, Observer from Chandigarh Sports Council and members from all affiliated units of CACA attended the meeting.

The following have been elected office-bearers: vice presidents — Dr PS Gill, Mr Subhash Marya and Mr KS Brar; treasurer — Mr JK Wadhera; joint secretary — Mr Ravinder Kumar; executive members — Mr Safri Lal and Mr Nassem Khan; and technical advisor — Mr Sawinder Singh.

Chandigarh boxing on July 24, 25

The 28th Chandigarh state senior men boxing championship will be held on July 24 and 25 at Sports Complex, Sector 42, boxing hall, Chandigarh.

During the championship Chandigarh state senior men team will be selected for participation in the 51st Senior National Boxing Championship to be held at Hisar from August 3 to August 8, weighing in will be held on July 24 between 8 am to 10 am.

Army cycle rally reaches Chandigarh

Chandigarh, July 11
A week-long army cycle rally from Pooh in Himachal Pradesh to Chandimandir cantonment culminated here today. The rally had been flagged-off by Commander, 36 Sector, Brig S.K. Vijeshwar, on July 5.

Organised by the Western Command Composite Signal Regiment under the aegis of 36 Sector, the rally comprised one JCO and eight other ranks. It was flagged-in here by Col R K Chopra, commanding officer of the regiment.

Pedaling 400 km through high mountains and landslide-prone areas, the soldiers faced heavy rains, strong winds and scorching heat, giving them an opportunity to test their stamina and will power.
