Local lads Raj Kumar and Pranav Chopra made the city proud by clinching doubles titles in the All-India Junior Ranking Tournaments held at Chennai and Bangalore, respectively. The duo of Raj Kumar and Pranav Chopra gave a sterling performance to win the title in the Union Bank All India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament held at Bangalore from June 26 to 30.
Giving this information, Mr Gian Inder Singh, senior badminton coach of the Punjab Sports Department who imparts training to these shuttlers said that, the pair of Raj Kumar and Pranav Chopra, both students of the local Tagore Public School, Aggar Nagar faced little resistence before wrapping up the title.
In the first round, they made mince meat of Nalin and Sumit from Maharashtra who they drubbed in straight sets 15-2, 15-3. In the second match, the duo romped home victorious comfortably against Sai Parneet and Ajay Kumar of Andhra Pradesh 15-6, 15-2.
In the semi-final, Raj and Pranav got the better of Avnesh and Nand Gopal from Madhya Pradesh 15-6 and 15-4 to secure berth in the final. In the title clash match, they previled over P Naveen Kumar and Vidya Sagar of Andhra Pradesh 15-9 and 15-6 to bag the title.
However, in the singles final, Raj Kumar waged a spirited battle against Saurav Verma of Madhya Pradesh before going down 12-15 and 8-15.
In the Krishna Khaitan, All-India Junior Badminton Tournament held at Chennai from July 1 to 6, Raj Kumar and Pranav repeated their performance by clinching the title. In the final, the pair came out triumphant over Ishan Naqvi and Gautam from Uttar Pradesh. They won the verdict 15-9 and 15-3.
