Neeta to enact short stories
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 16
Amritsar-based theatre actress Neeta Mohindra will reappear on the stage of Tagore Theatre after a long time. A performer par excellence, she has long been associated with famous film-makers and theatre directors like M.K. Raina, who is also the director of her latest production, “Buhe Barian”.

Based on the short stories of four eminent Punjabi writers representing different eras, the play has been designed to trace the gradual change in Punjabi language and its flavour, and also portray the roles women have had to assume over the changing times. In Chandigarh today, Neeta talked about her own transformation from one play to another, and about the concept behind “Buhe Barian”, which is all about enactments of stories.

“We decided to work on the theme long ago. M.K. Raina gave me the choice to select stories that I thought would be best translated in the medium of theatre. Out of the many shortlisted stories, I finally selected those by Amrita Pritam, Kartar Singh Duggal, Ajit Caur and Veena Verma. Somewhere these stories provide linkage in terms of the obligations of women over the ages, as also their suffering. They are all representative of women’s concerns. We plan to produce plays on 25 such stories,” she said.

Beginning with Harpal Tiwana, Neeta has achieved many a credit. She is also featuring in former news anchor Shashi Kumar’s first film, “Kaya Taran”, which was screened for the first time in Delhi yesterday. Sharing screen space with actress Seema Biswas, Neeta plays the main lead in the film that develops in the backdrop of 1984 riots against the Sikhs.
