Programme on health management
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 16
The role of patient and doctor should evolve to meet the new concepts of healthcare as a proactive system for well-being, said Mr Daljit Singh, CEO — Operations, Fortis Heart Institute and Multi-speciality Hospital, in Chandigarh yesterday.

Addressing a CII awareness programme on executive health management, he said contemporary models of healthcare saw the patient as a responsible and active player in managing his or her healthcare through lifestyle and behavioural modifications, rather than a passive patient receiving treatment for disease already under way. Modern physicians had to take the role of teachers, advisers and coaches, offering intensive counselling for better overall health. Essentially, the focus had to shift from “disease” care to healthcare, Mr Daljit Singh emphasised.

The day-long programme saw experts from different streams of medicine offer prescriptions on ways and means to protect the most valuable asset - human capital - by taking control of one’s health in an increasingly complex working environment. Different sessions looked at ways to maintain work-life balance, manage stress and change lifestyles.

Night sweeping from August 1
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 16
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh will start night sweeping from August 1 in certain sectors of the city.

A resolution to start night sweeping as a “pilot project” in Sectors 8, 9 and 17 was passed at a meeting of the sanitation committee held under the chairmanship of Mr Chander Mukhi Sharma here today.

While moving the agenda for night sweeping, Mr Sharma said at night, parking lots, verandas and other open places could be cleaned in a better way, besides more vehicles for dumping garbage were available at night.

Through another resolution, the committee decided to have a single shift for safai karamcharis from 6 am to 2.30 pm. Earlier, the safai karamcharis worked in two shifts from 6 am to 11 am and 3 pm to 6 pm. The problem of absenteeism in one of the other shifts was rampant. This would also begin on an experimental basis in Sectors 29 and 30 from August 1.

With a view to improving sanitation in areas covered by private contractors, it was decided to outsource sanitation work where the number of workers employed by the contractors was less. The requisite number of safai karamcharis would be hired from private agencies for cleanliness at the expense of the contractors.

In view of the insanitary conditions in contractor-managed areas, it was decided to hire up to 50 workers from the private agencies.

The committee also decided to give on contract the job for the removal of dry leaves to a private agency from February 1. The agency had quoted Rs 11,000 for the removal of a trolley of dry leaves per month in every sector.
