New Delhi, July 24
The Left parties today urged the Centre to enact a law for protecting the rights of the people in holding demonstration and opposed the Bombay High Court order that imposed a fine on the Shiv Sena and the BJP for holding a ‘bandh’.
“The right to dissent and hold protests are inherent and inalienable rights of the people in a democratic polity. These are enshrined in the Constitution,” the CPM said in a statement here.
The party said, “In recent times, judiciary has been curbing the right to strike and banning the protests in the form of ‘bandhs’. The Mumbai High Court judgement will have serious implications on democracy and polity of the country.”
