Srinagar, July 27
Vijay Divas was observed by the Mountain Division at Dras yesterday to pay homage to the Army personnel who had laid down lives in the Kargil war in 1999.
Wreaths were laid at the war memorial. Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad, GOC-in-Chief of Northern Command, presided over the function while Lieut-Gen M.L. Naidu, GOC of the Ladakh-based 14 Corps of the Army, officers of the Dras-based 8 Mountain Division and GOC of 29 Infantry Division participated. Mrs and Mr G.L. Batra, parents of late Capt Vikram Batra, who lost his life in the Kargil war, were also present on the occasion.
In his address at the Sainik Sammelan General Hari Prasad recalled the heroic deeds of the brave officers and men who fought against heavy odds and laid down lives.
The sammelan was followed by various other programmes, which included a photo display covering various events of 8 Mountain Division and 3 Infantry Division, photos of Kargil heroes, weapons and equipment captured in operation Vijay.
A memorial service at the Dras war memorial was organised which was attended by senior Army officers and jawans.
