No rains affecting rice crop: expert

PAU scientists have said that rice crop is under severe water stress due to drought like situation in Punjab. However the major diseases of rice like bacterial blight, sheath blight, sheath rot, stem rot and the insect pests, are not going to affect the crop.

School students enjoy water games

The Swiss International Public School, Model Town, held a ‘Beat the heat — welcome the monsoons’ function in which tiny tots enjoyed splashing, waddling and paddling.

According to Ms Daisy Pruthi, Principal of the school, the main aim of the celebrations was to allay the fear of water among the kids, teach them to stay safe in water and make them enjoy water games. Many educative sports like balloon toss, water pool and toy hunt were played.

Quiz contest at GGNIVS

The Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Vocational Studies (GGNIVS) on Tuesday organised an inter-class quiz contest. It was the first in the series of the quiz contests which would be organised in the coming weeks. The idea was to give a boost to the computer knowledge of students. Two participants, from two batches of B.Sc. (IT), took part in the competition. The quiz questions were based on general knowledge and Information Technology. Kulwinder and Shalab in team B were declared the winners. They would compete in the next series of the quiz contest.

PTU distance learning centre

With distance learning education mode fast picking up in market, another distant learning centre of the Punjab Technical University (PTU) has been set up at Jamalpur here. Mr Harinder Pal Singh, Zonal Head of the PTU, Distance Learning Education Programme, inaugurated the centre. He highlighted the salient features of the programmes offered by the PTU.

The centre at Jamalpur will cater to the needs of the area and offer courses both in IT and management fields. The IT courses which have a ready market include B.Sc.(IT), M.Sc.(IT), PGDCA, DCA and MCA. The Master of Business Administration course offered by the PTU is a two year programme which trains students to be professional business managers.

Seminar on effective teaching

A seminar on ‘Effective teaching-primary system’ was organised at the Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School in BRS Nagar here Tuesday. Mrs Rashmi Gautam, Principal, Riverdale High School, Dehradun, and Advisor NCERT, enlightened the teachers through her concepts designed to make teaching and learning more informative and interactive. She gave tips to teachers on self-imbibed discipline, learning by doing and creating a student-friendly class room.

Toss Ka Boss

Pepsi, the official global partner of the ICC Champions Trophy, organised the Toss Ka Boss Cricket Tournament at the Tagore Public School here. It was an intra-class event of six overs, with each team comprising six members.

The team led by Shaminder won the match. Abhinav Goyal was declared the man-of-the-match.

Self-improvement

Dr Dev Raj Vij, Dean (retired) of Colleges, Punjabi University, Patiala, visited the SAN Jain Model Senior Secondary School, Daresi Road, to interact with students. On arrival, Mr Vij, a Ph.D in Psychology and former principal of University College of Education, was accorded a warm welcome by Mr Kashmiri Lal Jain, President of the managing committee and Mr S.C. Malhotra, Principal of the host school.

School honours brilliant students

SKN Model High School organised a function to honour its brilliant students today. Mr S.L. Manocha inaugurated the function while Mr Krishan Rajpal was the chief guest. The brilliant student of the year, Amandeep, was rewarded cash. Former students were also given awards by councillor Shubh Lata. The function ended with the Principal's speech. The function started one and a half hours late as important guests arrived late.

Activity-oriented teaching

The tiny tots of the KG Section of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School- St Mary's Kindergarten, are all smiles with the introduction of the new system of learning. The child-centered education introduced now focuses on the child's potential and aims at harnessing it to the maximum. Activity oriented teaching techniques like ‘show and tell’, ‘brainstorming’, ‘how many ways’ rev up the child's vocabulary and activities like ‘action phonics’, ‘matching, sorting and sequencing’ create, sustain and invigorate child's interest in learning. These also go a long way in creating awareness and boosting cognitive development.

The core values of life are imparted at every step in school, be it through the ‘healthy food tiffin week’ or planting seeds during the environment week. Aesthetic expression is encouraged with the aid of dramatisation of plays written by teachers.

At school, laughter and learning go hand in hand with the vision of creating personalities that are happy, innovative, proactive and fulfilled.

Students celebrate environment week

Ryan International School, Ludhiana, today started the environment week celebrations. The occasion, graced by the presence of Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor, Mr Kanwar Deep Singh (Pappi), a former Municipal Councillor, Mr Sharma, Principal of Everest Public School, aimed at spreading eco-friendly message to the people of Ludhiana. The students staged a cultural programme based on the theme of ‘Conserving Nature and its priceless resources’. The students of the Montessori Section celebrated Green Day and MIII children presented a mesmerising Eco-Fashion show.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Jaishree Gupta, Principal of the school, said it was important that students inculcated awareness about environment form the very beginning. Keeping in view the spirit of team work, eco-clubs were also launched, namely- The Water Brigade, The Power Brigade- and the Eco-friendly Brigade. Keeping up with their mission of ‘Painting The Face of Earth Green’, students and dignitaries planted saplings on the school campus.

Khush award for PAU agronomist

Ludhiana, July 28
Dr Lall Singh Brar, Senior Agronomist-cum-Head, Department of Agronomy and Agrometeorology, Punjab Agricultural University, here has been awarded Dr Gurdev Singh Khush Distinguished Professor Award in recognition of his excellence in research, teaching and extension activities at the college level.

This award carries cash and a citation. Dr Lall has to his credit 90 research articles, 92 popular articles, 2 bulletins and 3 book chapters based on his research work. As many as 67 of his recommendations have been included in the Package of Practices of the university for the benefit of the farmers. He has attended six international and 20 national conferences. Students briefed on road, rail safety rules

Most of the railway accidents occur due to human error while only about 10 per cent were caused due to mechanical failure or natural factors. This was stated by Mr Purshotam Lal Ahuja, former safety expert, while delivering a lecture on ‘unmanned railway crossings’ at Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School here today.

Emphasising road and railway safety rules, he advised students not to take anything from strangers in the trains.

District Bar website launched

The Financial Commissioner (Revenue), Punjab, Ms Gurbinder Chahal, launched the website of the District Bar Association at a function organised in the Conference Hall of New Judicial Complex here today. She also released the directory of the association.

The website — www.ludhianalawyersdba.com — was launched in the presence of the District and Sessions Judge, Mr Baldev Singh, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, the SDM, Mr Prem Chand, and a large number of lawyers.

Addressing the function, Ms Chahal said the state government would launch a website, in which all Acts and Rules of Law would be available apart from useful information for the persons in the legal profession.

Earlier, she was given a warm welcome by the District Bar Association president, Mr Balwinder Goel, secretary S.S.Cheema, vice-president Nagesh Singh Gill, R.K.Maurya, Wazir Singh and Mr K.R.Sikri, former DBA president.

Mr B.K.Goel said complete residential addresses, landline numbers, cellphone numbers, e-mail addresses of local lawyers and those working across the country had been compiled in the website. It also has the information about history of the association from the end of 18th.

He appreciated the role of executive member Wazir Singh who had designed the website.

Factionalism among lawyers

Factionalism in the District Bar Association (DBA) yesterday came to the fore after a meeting which was called on the requisition of members showing resentment over the allocation of space for running photostat machines to near and dears and canteens on every floor of the Lawyers Complex. Supporters of Mr Goel and a former DBA president, Mr Harish Rai Dhanda, exchanged hot words.

The DBA President, Mr Balwinder Goel, claimed that he fielded all the queries raised by the member, Mr Vinod Sharma. Apart from him, none other came forward to speak, despite repeated requests in support of requisition.

But the main requisitionist, Mr Vinod Sharma, alleged that the Mr Goel did not explain the things properly. After speaking for a while, DBA president adjourned the meeting and left with his supporters. However, the a number of lawyers wanted to express their views. He said it was not a democratic way. A number of lawyers, including a former DBA president, Mr Harish Rai Dhanda, Mr Rajeev Duggal, Mr Naval Kishore Chibber, all former DBA secretaries, Mr Pardeep Sharma and Ms Kamaljyoti showed resentment for not allowing them to speak at the meeting. The Dhanda faction said instead of leaving the meeting, Mr Goel should have taken suggestions from the house.
