Dharna by teachers continues
Ludhiana, August 9 President of the union Pawan Kumar said the police had no business beating teachers protesting outside Mr Harnam Dass's residence yesterday. The future of that country was bleak where the teachers -so called nation builders- were treated so shabbily, he said. Mr Balraj
Singh, secretary of the union, said they were dead set against the contract policy adopted by the government. One of their demands was that the 'hire and fire 'policy should be scrapped. Asked whether they had been summoned by Mr Johar, Education Minister , vice- president, Ms Kiranjit Kaur ,said that such reports had appeared in papers , but they yet to receive any official letter yet. Mr Piara Singh Dhillon, president, said that it was high time that the government met the demands of the teachers as the students too suffered during such protests. |

Estimates panel to visit PAU
Ludhiana, August 9 According to a letter issued by the Vidhan Sabha secretariat, the committee has decided to examine the expenditure incurred by the state Agriculture Department and Punjab Agricultural University. The university has been getting annual financial assistance worth Rs 80 crore from the state government. During the current financial year, the Vidhan Sabha has passed grants worth Rs 104 crore for it. This includes Rs 24 crore which was released by the state government as arrears of the GPF and CPF and other incremental expenditure. The committee will also examine the performance of the university during the past three years. |

College bags top 4 positions in BAMS
Mandi Gobindgarh, August 9 This was stated in a press note released here today by Mr R.C Jain, Principal of the College. Deep Shikha stood first in the university by securing 1512 marks out of 1900 (79.57%) with distinction in all subjects. Anjali Sharma bagged the second position in the university by securing 1450 marks from a total of1900 (76.31%) with distinction in subject Charak (P), Dravyguna & Ras-shastra. Amandeep stood third in the university by scoring 1448 marks (76.21%) with distinction in the subjects Dravyguna and Ras-Shastra and Sarabjit Kaur stood fourth in the university by securing 1430 marks (75.26%) with distinction in Dravyguna, Ras-shastra, Rog Vigyan and Charak (P). Dr Zora Singh, Chairman, Desh Bhagat Group of Institutes, Dr R.C. Jain, Principal and Dr J.S Tripathi, Vice-Principal, have congratulated the students on their performance. |

Seminar on strategic management
August 9, Ludhiana It was presided over by Dr Anup Kaur Bansal, Principal of the college. Prof Varinder Kumar, Head of the Commerce Department, Government College, Kapurthala, was the chief guest on the occasion. Prof Varinder Kumar discussed latest changes in all functional policies, especially concerning marketing, research and development. He further discussed the basis on which a strategy should be followed. |

Preparations for R-Day in full swing
Ludhiana, August 9 Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, said that the Independence Day parade would consist of the contingents of Punjab Police, Traffic Police, Home Guards, NCC (boys and girls), NCC Air Wing, Scouts, girl Guides , ex-servicemen, besides bands from Punjab Police and the Bostol jail. In the function, a mass PT show and cultural programme would be presented by the students of around 50 schools of the city. He said that a committee headed by Mr M.S. Jaggi, SDM (West), had been formed, which would supervise the rehearsals of the cultural programme to be held from August 9 to August 13. |

City singer strikes gold in Zee Antakshari
Ludhiana, August 9 He could not believe that his audition, held in March 2004 would see him auditioning in Mumbai in July and to top it all he would appear with one of the most beautiful woman of the country. He and Tanushree comprised the Parwana team and they won by securing 550 point, the highest in that episode. Haneet said,"My joy knew no bounds when Zee TV told me that I would be participating in the Antakshri contest to be organised on July 23 in Famous Studio, Mumbai and that too with a celebrity. I have admired Annu Kaoor, host of ‘Antakshri’ for his spontaneous interaction with the contestants. When I got an opportunity to meet him face to face, I was in seventh heaven. Actually when Zee team had come to Ludhiana to shoot for the programme, I had not applied for it. During the shooting, the anchors Pallavi and Annu Kapur asked audience members to sing. I had just gone to see the programme out of curiosity. I started singing and they liked my voice and invited me for another audition in Mumbai in July." While Haneet was in Mumbai for a week, he also auditioned for another popular programme Sa, Re, Ga ,Ma Pa.He is awaiting the results.Harneet is quite passionate about
music. He had taken training from Ravi Shankar in Kanpur as he lived there. He won the “Best Singer, Kanpur” award , followed by “Best Singer Uttar Pradesh” award. Two years ago, he moved to Ludhiana, and here too, he does 'ryaz' for two hours daily and also runs drycleaning business in the city. |
