It belongs to Haryana, says Chautala

Chandigarh, August 9
Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today said Chandigarh belonged to Haryana and he would not let anybody claim it.

Mr Chautala was reacting to the Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s assertion that Chandigarh should be transferred to Punjab according to the Rajiv-Longowal Accord.

In a statement issued here today, Mr Chautala also charged Capt Amarinder Singh of adopting a dual policy saying that while on one hand, Capt Amarinder Singh had got the Punjab Termination of Agreements Bill-2004 passed to nullify all inter-state accords and on the other he was talking of claiming Chandigarh.

He said that it appeared that Capt Amarinder Singh had been playing in the hands of the Congress-led Central Government and making irresponsible statements to deviate the attention of the people from the sensitive issue of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. He said it also appeared that Capt Amarinder Singh had been crossing all limits of decency and making irresponsible statements to remain in news and save his government.

Mr Chautala said Haryana had always suffered injustice on the inter-state territorial issues after the bifurcation of the joint Punjab. He said the recommendations of the Punjab Boundary Commission headed by Mr Justice J.C.Shah should be implemented in toto, and Chandigarh should be transferred to Haryana. He said this Commission had, after examining the views of various organisations, individuals and representations as well as memoranda given to it, recommended that tehsil Kharar, including the Chandigarh capital project area, should be part of Haryana.

He said that usually the Government of India had been accepting the report of the Boundary Commission in toto, but in this case it was not done.
