SGFI move to benefit DAV school students
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, August 11
Thousands of sportsmen and women studying in more than 680 schools under the DAV Management Committee throughout India will stand to benefit from the recent decision of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) to grant them affiliation for the year 2004-2005. Earlier students of various DAV schools had to represent their respective state units affiliated to the SGFI for participation in the National School Games. Now the latest approval of the SGFI headed by Padamshree Satpal president, and Mr P.S. Chhabra, Secretary-General, to grant affiliation to DAV schools will help them in getting good exposure in the National School Games.

Mr Ravinder Talwar, Principal, DAV Senior Secondary school, Sector 8 Chandigarh and senior vice-president of the SGFI is the man behind this initiative. According to Mr Talwar this was a long pending demand of the DAV management as already Kendriya Vidyalya Sangathan and Navodya Vidyalya Sangathan were an affiliated unit of the SGFI.

When asked, about the selection of the final DAV team at the national level, Mr Talwar said, at the state, zonal and national level, they had the Mahatma Hansraj Sports tournament. In these tournaments, probables are chosen in each discipline. He said the Mahatma Hansraj tournament would also gain in importance.

He said DAV institutions were providing a lot of thrust to sports activities. He said like in the case of Chandigarh, most of the DAV players were representing the UT team in the National School Games.

When contacted, Padamshree Satpal said, the SGFI had taken the decision to provide more exposure to DAV institutions and the affiliation was for one year.
