According to a Shimla report the Nathpa-Jhakri project, which resumed generation today after six days, was shut down late in the evening. The Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam was advised by the Centre to shut down the project for at least another two days. A final decision in this regard will be taken on Monday after taking stock of the situation.

Jhakri, August 14
The 1500 MW Nathpa-Jhakri hydel power project today started generation with three units being made functional even as reports of increase in the water level of Parchu river by 2 feet has to some extent scaled down the threat of flood in the areas along the Sutlej.

“Though the danger still exists but after taking precautionary measures we have made three units functional today,” Mr H.K. Sharma, Director (Civil) said. He added that there had been no increase in the water level of the Sutlej as the discharge today was 530 cumecs while the silt level was at 2008 ppm.

The NJPC officials said even in case of a flood in the Sutlej there would be ample time to close down generation to save the project.

Experts say the natural overflow of water from the lake into the Parchu river could be a positive signal as this way the accumulated water in the lake would gradually drain out. Reports said between 8.45 a.m and 11.15 a.m today there had been an increase of 2 feet in the water level in Parchu river.
