Education should reach the poor, says Pathak Chandigarh, August 15 Addressing the gathering, Professor Pathak called for “introspection and retrospection and some kind of soul searching about the targets set vis-à-vis the achievements made so far while preparing to face the future challenges”. Lamenting that “in societal dwindling values we all cry and even agitate at the cost of our national exchequer for our rights without caring for our sacred duties as enshrined in our directive principles”, Professor Pathak stressed the need for an all-pervasive necessity for growth and prosperity of the nation as a whole. The benefits of independence must percolate to the downstream, he maintained. He called for a change in the mindset so that all policies, researches were not only directed at the elitist level but also served the masses. Emphasising the need for being responsive to change for survival, Professor Pathak observed that the rapid changes had made it “mandatory for the survival of society itself to re-examine the aims, contents, qualifications and methods of educational systems”. He said it should be ensured that education for all did not remain a mere slogan and educational facilities became accessible and disabled-friendly. The Vice-Chancellor exhorted the academic fraternity to collectively make “the present system more meaningful, purposeful and beneficial to society in general and this institution in particular, which in turn will help realise our dream of developed nation a reality”. |

Plea to widen CAT jurisdiction Chandigarh, August 15 The backlog of only about 1,000 cases at the local Bench, which has jurisdiction Punjab, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, besides Chandigarh, has set alarm bells ringing in the quarters concerned, including the Central Administrative Tribunal Bar Association. Even the staff at the local Bench is reported to be under-utilised. Alarmed at the dwindling number of cases,Mr H.C. Arora and Mr Rohit Seth, president and secretary, respectively of the association, have given a representation to the Chairman of the Principal Bench of CAT in New Delhi. In their representation, the association demanded the enlargement of the jurisdiction of the Bench by the inclusion of statutory corporations such as the BSNL,the FCI, the PGI and Panjab University and public sector banks. The Principal Bench had recently constituted a committee to examine the feasibility of bringing more corporations under the jurisdiction of the CATs. Regarding the benefits of transfer of more cases to CAT, the association said speedy justice would be available to the
litigants, mostly government employees. Besides, it would reduce the pendency in the high court giving more time to the court to decide important cases , Mr D.R. Sharma, a former president of the association said. At present even the writ petitions admitted in 1990 are yet to come up for regular hearings in the high court while the original applications filed in 2004 are being decided at the local Bench, giving much-needed relief to the government servants in the service matters. There was no logic in keeping the service matters of various corporations in the jurisdiction of the high court as it took several years to decide such cases , said an advocate. They should be transferred to CAT as its purpose was to provide faster justice to the employees. The association highlighted that the Central Government was competent to bring any government-controlled corporation under the purview of CAT under Section 14(2) of the Administrative Tribunals Act,1985.

Theatre her first love Himani Shivpuri is better known as “Devaki Bhojai” of serial “Humrahi”. She has given many unforgettable performances. We can see her in films as well as in television serials. She has been part of many blockbusters also. She can make you laugh whenever she wants to. She has managed her film and TV roles very well so far. We saw her in “Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon” lately and in “Josh”, a serial on Star Plus. In a telephonic conversation, she shared her experiences with Chandigarh Tribune. “I have not restricted myself to any one medium. Both the mediums have their own importance. Films pay much more and give you wider audience. But television can take you to everybody’s drawing room,” she said. Talking about “Josh”, she said, “I signed this serial because it was not the typical “saas bahu” family drama. It has some different elements”. She has also done theatre. “I am originally a theatre artiste. Television and films came much later into my life. Theatre was my first love, my passion,” she said. She shot into fame by playing “Devaki Bhojai” in “Humrahi”. No wonder most of the people know her as “Devaki” rather than by her real name. This popularity also brought her a lot of film offers including “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”. “I had a feeling that this film would be a big hit,” she said. She has also acted in other hit movies like “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge”, “Pardes”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”. “It was fun working with Shahrukh Khan. He is a sincere and hard working man,” she said. Talking about the television again, she said, “You have to admit one thing — television is like newspaper. You read it, and when the day is over, it has no value. Cinema has timeless appeal.” But she admires serials like “Hum Log”, “Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi” and “Khaandaan”, which depicted some harsh truth. “Besides, I hate it when serials keep dragging just for the heck of it,” she said. Her philosophy in life is to live and let live and enjoy the beautiful moments of one’s life. |

Wonder what could be the subject of discussion when two women sit together for a while? Definitely not the Iraq hostage crisis or the new economic policy! More often than not it is gossip. They are more interested in what is happening in the neighborhood. It might be about neighbour’s affair with his secretary or the jewellery that ‘Ms Saxena’ wore last night at the party. Keeping this in mind, Sahara Manoranjan will launch a comedy serial, “Aao behan chugli karen”, from August 18. It is comedy series based on the lives of six elite women who live in a posh locality of Mumbai. These women are completely different from each other and come from varied backgrounds. The only thing that binds them is their habit of gossiping. Himani Shivpuri who plays a “Sardarni”, Pammi, from Delhi is very enthusiastic about her role. “In the serial I own a hi-tech gym. I am always keeping a vigil on any couple romancing in the gym,” quips Himani. “Pammi loves to joke about those poking fun at ‘Sardars’,” she said. “Though all women indulge in it day in and day out, a few admit it. Bitching is not our trait, they believe,” feels Sejal Shah, who plays Chaitali, a cleanliness freak. “I had been waiting for a long time to do a comedy role. So when this offer came I grabbed it with both my hands,” says Sejal. “Synergy and teamwork among the characters is essential for a comedy to work,” she believes. Anita Kawal is a Maharashtrian character Anju in the serial who is in the forefront of a rumor game. She dislikes all that is Sindhi because her husband is Sindhi. But in public they are a very loving couple. “For a comedy to work the script should be very good. The sense of timing is also necessary to give a realistic touch to the scenes,” says Anita Kanwal. Another interesting character of the soap is of Jhumpa De, which is played by Shruti Ulfat. “Jhumpa is a seductress who is well aware of the effect she has on men. She is proud of her good looks and is looking for her ideal man,” says
Shruti. OC |
