5 new operating theatres at PGI soon

Chandigarh, August 15
Five operating theatres would be started in the New OPD Block at the PGI soon in addition to the ones already working. The Director, PGI, Prof K.K. Talwar, stated this at the 57th Independence Day celebrations at the institute after unfurling the national flag here today.

Addressing doctors, nurses and other staff, the Director also talked about staff welfare. “As you all are committed to the institute, so should the institute be committed to you,” he said.

Referring to the heavy patient rush at the PGI’s emergency, the Director said efforts were being made to control it for the better functioning.

Nutrition programme launched

Chandigarh, August 15
The Indian Council of Social Welfare (ICSW), Chandigarh chapter, has started the nutritional programme for children in the age group of one to three years at Dhanas Colony.

The society picked up 100 poor children from the area under the programme. This is the continuation of the existing Reproductive and Child Health Programme. Mr Rakesh Chopra is the project coordinator of the programme.

Rohan, Nusrat pedal to glory

Rohan Kakar of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, and Nusrat Khan of SD Public School, won laurels in their respective events in the Independence Day Chandigarh Road Cycling Races for boys and girls organised by Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association at Lake Club today.

About 70 students took part in the massed start events in senior, junior and subjunior categories.

Ajay Trehan smoothly pedalled to win the final sprint in men mass start grinding ahead of all the riders in the bunch. In boys (under- 18) Manmohan Singh was relegated to the second place, when he rode dangerously in the group on the busy road.

Nassem Khan, former cyclist and executive member, CACA, gave away the prizes to the winners. The following are the results of events held during the cycling competitions:

30 km mass start (Men) Senior:

Ajay Trehan (SDC-32)1, 48M 09.42 sec, Ajit Singh (SDC-32) 2, 48M 09.54 sec, Pritam Pal Singh (CCC) 3, 48M 27.78 sec.

20 km mass start for boys (Under-18) Junior:

10 km mass start for boys (Under-16) Junior:

Mr Rakesh Mohindra, secretary of the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association, will organise the Chandigarh Mountain Bike Cycling Races on August 29, 2004 at Forest Hill Country and Golf Club when cyclists will be selected for National camps. Free equipment will be provided by Kalvin Bikes which has agreed to adopt Chandigarh mountain bikers for national championships.

Nadia, Dheeraj corner glory

Nadia Saini of DAV Public School, Sector 8, in the women’s section and Dheeraj Arora of Reserve Bank of India in men’s section cornered glory by winning titles in the Prof R.S. Mehta Memorial Table Tennis Tournament played here today at the TT Hall, Sector 23, Chandigarh.

The girls singles went in favour of Manisha of Patiala while the boys singles title was bagged by Rohit of Amritsar. Dheeraj combined well with Nadia to clinch the mixed doubles title.

Results: (all finals): Girls: Manisha (Pat) b Nadia Saini (Chd) 11-7,13-11, 9-14,1-11, 8-11,11-6; Boys: Rohit (Asr) b Munish (Pat) 10-12,11-7,11-6,14-12, 6-11, 11-9.

Men: Dheeraj Arora (RBI) b Munish Bhardwaj (PU, Chd) 11-8, 9-11,13-11,10-12,11-3,11-7; Women: Nadia Saini (Chd) b Gurinder Kaur 9-11,11-13,11-9,11-6,11-7.

Mixed doubles: Dheeraj and Nadia b Vikas and Gurinder 11-8,12-10, 9-11,12-14,11-6.

Stadium Red win

Stadium Red outplayed New Friends, Kurali, 2-1 in the final of the three day and night five a side football tournament organised by Bangiya Sanskriti Sammilani, at Sector 35, here today.

Sameer downs Rahul

Sameer Singh downed Rahul Singla 7-2 in the fourth Choudhary Vishnu Pal Memorial Nine Ball Pool State Tournament which began here today at Chandigarh Billiards and Coaching Centre, Sector 22. In other matches of the day, Sameer Sharma beat Raman Budhiraja 7-2, Sachin toiled hard to beat Arpit Seth while Jaswinder Singh defeated Sachleen 7-3.

Tribune sports meet results

A one-day sports meet in different categories and disciplines was organised by the sports committee of The Tribune Employees Union at the ground adjoining the Tribune Colony here today to mark Independence Day.

Mr O.P. Arora, Additional General Manager, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.

Mr Jagtar Singh Sidhu, president of the union, was also present.

NPS cagers back from USA

Chandigarh, August 15
Cagers of New Public School, Sector 18, today returned after attending a 10-day training camp at Orlando, USA. The camp was conducted by Jim Cromwell and Mr Ace under the guidance of Youth Basketball of America. According to Mr R.D. Singh, who also went with the boys, there were five teams from Mexico, Venezuela, Antigua and Colombia besides India who took part in the camp which was meant for players in the age group 12-18.

NPS boys also played a friendly match with Spurce Greek High school, Daytona, Florida which the former lost after giving a tough fight. Dr R.D. Singh said, an NRI couple, Dr Satinder and Ms Deep Kohli, arranged the camp and matches for the NPS boys. The boys also visited Disney World, NASA Institute and other places of interest.

GMSSS-46 eves in soccer final

Chandigarh, August 15
Eves of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, surprised St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, and entered the final of the Chandigarh Subjunior Girls Football Championship being played here today at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

Both the teams could not score any goal in the stipulated hours and also in extra time. Later in the penalty shootout, sudden death rule was applied and finally GMSSS-46 emerged winners.

Tomorrow the final will be played between GMSSS-46 and Sacred Heart at 4.45 pm.
