Athens, August 15
For the second successive day, Indian women weightlifters missed their date with the Olympic medal. If yesterday Kunjarani lost the medal race to finish fifth in the 48kg category, it was turn of Sanamacha Chanu to miss the bronze in 53kg category today.

Otherwise, Indians had more to cheer about the performance of its athletes on the country's Independence Day than yesterday. Though Aparna Popat lost her pre-quarter-final match to fourth seed Mia of the Netherlands, but it was not without a fight. She had taken the first set at 11-9 after trailing 4-9 but subsequently wilted against the guiles of her more fancied opponent in the next two to lose 1-11, 3-11.

In table tennis, Indian challenge in men's singles ended after Sharath Kamal Achanta losing to Lai Chak Ko of Hong Kong in the second round 9-11, 5-11, 9-11, 6-11.

Shooters Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Mansher Singh failed to strike form as they were relegated to insignificant positions.

In boxing also, India suffered its second reverse as Vijender lost 20-25 on points to Mustafa Karagollu of Turkey in the 64kg category.

In archery, except for Dola Banerjee, who lost in the qualification round Jean Kristin Lewis of South Africa, other archers — Sumangala Sharma and Reena Kumari — made it to the pre-quarterfinals, winning their first round qualifiers.

Chanu with a snatch of 82.5kg and a clean and jerk of 107.5kg finished fourth with an aggregate of 190kg. Udomporn Polsak of Thailand won the gold medal with an aggregate lift of 222.5kg, with a clean and jerk of 125 kg and snatch of 97.5kg.Back
