City hospital corrects hip bone disorder
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 16
For 12-year-old Kenyan resident Noor K. Motapanyane, Chandigarh has proved to be lucky destination. His rare hip problem, where the hip bone had slipped and restricted him to a wheelchair, has been treated at a Sector 34 hospital here.

With Noor’s hormonal problems and obesity (he weighs over 80 kgs), doctors in Kenya were reluctant to operate on him. They wanted him to shed at least 30 per cent weight before surgery.

“I had contacted the doctors all over my country and even consulted doctors in Europe. All were reluctant to operate on my child due to his hormonal problems. Then I came to India in July and consulted various doctors in Mumbai. But the doctors there were also reluctant to take up the case due to the same problems,’’ said Noor’s mother Salma, talking to mediapersons today.

The family then arrived in the city 10 days ago and the child was operated upon within days.

Dr Harinder Batth, consultant orthopaedician, said he took up the case as a challenge. “On diagnosis, we found Noor was suffering from slipped upper femoral epiphysis, a disease that is rare in India but is more prevalent in Africa. The boy needed immediate surgery as he was unable to walk and was the wheelchair.’’

“At Kenya, Noor was diagnosed late and the doctors choose to give extended physiotherapy for treatment, while the treatment should have been a surgery,’’ Dr Batth said.

Post-surgery, the Kenyan family is rejoicing the cost-effective treatment in India.

“The doctor’s fee alone in Kenya cost us 10,000 dollars apart from the cost of medicines. But here, in all we have spent around 1000 dollars and importantly Noor is fine now,’’ said Noor’s mother.

Hospital fails fire safety norms
Tribune News Service

Mohali, August 16
A team of fire officials today visited Silver Oaks Hospital in Phase X to inspect fire safety preparations.
According to Sub-fire officer, Mr Devinder Singh Dogra, the hospital had inadequate fire safety preparations. “The building has five floors. The top floor houses a nursing institute. There are only five fire extinguishers in the building which is highly inadequate. The kitchen complex which runs on LPG, too, does not have arrangement to control a fire,” he said.

Moreover, the fire extinguishers installed in the building did not conform to the norms. These are dry chemical powder based which are not suitable for hospital. Instead carbon dioxide extinguisher should be used,” Mr Dogra said. The hospital authorities had promised to do the needful.
