More than 130 units collected at blood camp

Mohali, August 19
More than 130 units of blood were collected at a camp organised jointly by the Mohali Industries Association (MIA), the SSI branch of the State Bank of India and the local Rotary Club at MIA Bhawan here today.

The camp was inaugurated by the SDM, Mr M.L. Sharma, who was the chief guest. The SP, Mr Rakesh Agrawal, who was the guest of honour, also donated blood. Blood collection arrangements were made by a team of doctors from the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, led by Dr Ravneet Bedi.

Mr Gurmeet Singh, president, MIA, said blood was donated by volunteers, bank staff, officials of the central excise wing, industrial workers, police personnel and members of the Rotary Club.

2-month-old dies of diarrhoea

Panchkula, August 19
Two-month-old Somvir, who was suffering from diarrhoea, died at the General Hospital today.
The baby was brought to the hospital from Rajiv Colony with diarrhoea symptoms. After a bout of vomiting, the vomit entered in his respiratory tract, causing his death.

A 12-year-old boy from Indra Colony died of brain disorder at the hospital last midnight. The victim, Mohit, died of meningo encephalitis after he was rushed to the hospital. Initially, the doctors suspected it to be a case of diarrhoea, but later it was found that he was suffering from a brain disorder.

During this month, over 70 cases of diarrhoea have been referred to the General Hospital from various slums, including Indra Colony, Rajiv Colony, Azad Colony, Sector 19, and neighbouring areas of Mani Majra and Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh.

The Civil Surgeon, Dr Satvir Chaudhary, said health surveillance had been increased in slum and labour colonies of the district. “Fogging is continuing in these colonies, and we have asked health teams to be more vigilant and create awareness about cleanliness and hygiene so as to avoid the spread of water-borne and vector-borne diseases,” he said.

Chandigarh academy wins hockey tourney

Chandigarh, August 19
Chandigarh Hockey Academy (red) bagged the inaugural Sahibzada under-15 hockey tournament for boys which concluded here today at the Sector 42 hockey stadium.They thrashed CRZ, Sonepat, by four goals to nil and the star player was Dharamveer. Half time score was 1-0 in favour of the winners. Mr Inderjit Sandhu, Director, Sports, UT, was the chief guest who gave away the prizes.

In the very first minute of the match Dharamveer, wearing chest No. 7, struck with a field goal. However, this did not dampen the spirits of the Sonepat boys who continued to put pressure on the local players but did not succeed. After half time it was Sandeep Singh (chest No. 4) who converted a penalty corner in the thirtyninth minute into a vital 2-0 lead. In the fiftieth minute Dharamveer was quick to score another field goal and took the led to 3-0. Finally, in the sixtieth minute, it was the turn of Deepak Kumar (chest No. 11) who managed to score a goal form a penalty corner, taking the score to 4-0.

Sumit bags nine-ball pool title

Sumit Talwar, who won in the Chandigarh Nine-Ball Pool Championship in Sector 22Chandigarh, August 19
Sumit Talwar registered a win over Gagandeep to bag the title in the Chandigarh Nine-Ball Pool Championship that concluded at Sector 22 here today.
Sumit had to play a tough tie against Gagandeep and both were neck and neck at 6-6 before Sumit won 7-6.

In other league matches played during the day, Sumit beat Pramod 7-3, Rajat defeated Pramod 7-5, Gagandeep beat Rajat 7-3, Sumit defeated Rajat 7-3 and Gagandeep outclassed Pramod 7-4. The final rankings are: Sumit Talwar 1, Gagandeep 2, Rajat 3, Pramod 4.

Notices to guest houses

Chandigarh, August 19
A total of 21 unauthorised guest houses in the city and villages of the Union Territory will be served notices by the Chandigarh Administration, giving them 15 days time to wind up operations or else their premises will be sealed.

Notices will be sent tomorrow following the rejection of an appeal filed by a guest owner. The Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr Lalit Sharma, using quasi judicial powers rejected the plea of the guest house owner. The Administration had asked all guest house owners to get their buildings regularised by submitting their building plans and paying a fine.
