Malwa College celebrates Teej

The Girls' Wing of Malwa College, Bondli, celebrated Teej in a traditional way today. Mr Ranjan Khullar, Civil Judge, Kharar, was the chief guest and Ms Barjinder Kaur, secretary, PPCC, was the guest of honour.

An exhibition showcased Punjab's culture and heritage. Various traditional articles like bagh, phulkari, charkha, pakhis, chaaj, daris, chullah, chakki, bharoli, etc, were displayed. A large number of students dressed in bright coloured dresses, decked with traditional Punjabi jewellery like bangles, tikas, saggi phul and tiledar juti participated in various cultural items like kikli, folk-songs, action songs, sammi dance, skits and giddha.

Sandeep was declared “Miss Teej”, Priya “Gunwanti Panjaban”, and Anjna “Khoobsurat Muskan”. Rupinder Kaur was declared “Queen of Melody” and Babalpreet “Giddha Queen”.

The chief guest congratulated the organisers of the festival. Dr Parminder Singh, Principal of the college, appreciated the efforts of teachers for organising the festival and thanked the chief guest, guest of honour and the audience.

Students had a gala time at swings installed on the campus. Kheer and malpoorah were served to them.

Literary session held in college

Ludhiana, August 21
Literary orations were organised by the Department of English (postgraduate) of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, Ludhiana, here yesterday. Dr Manjit Jaidaka, Chairperson of the Department of English, Panjab University, Chandigarh, chaired the literary session and spoke on the topic,"Relevance of literature." Dr Harpreet Pruthi from the same department spoke on Shakespeare and his relevance in the modern times. Dr Pratibha Nagpal, also from Panjab University, delivered an extension lecture on "Indian writings in English." Dr Anup Kaur Bansal, Principal of the college, also spoke.

Paper-reading contest: The Economic Society of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Campus, Model Town, organised a paper-reading contest. Twentyfive students participated in the contest. Mr Seema Dua and Mrs Gurpreet Kaur of the Department of Economics were the judges.

Sham Kiran of Class XII (Arts) got the first prize, Manpreet of BA (final year) got the second prize while Ritu of BA (first year) and Jashanjot of BA (final year) were placed third. Consolation prizes were given to Nitika of BA (second year) and Inderpreet of BA (first year). Dr Mrs Anup Kaur Bansal, Principal of the college, gave away the prizes.

Students donate blood

Ludhiana, August 21
A blood donation camp was organised by the NSS units of Kamla Lohia S D College here with the help of the Red Cross Society today. Mr Jagmohan Gupta, president of the governing body, was the chief guest. Principal B D Budhiraja presented a vote of thanks. Dr Yograj Angrish and Mr Deepak Dhingra, Programme Officers, NSS, said that 70 students donated blood.

Declamation contest: On the 60th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, a tehsil-level declamation and painting competition were arranged at the Government Secondary School (Boys) Jawahar Nagar, Ludhiana, according to the directions of SDM (East), Ludhiana and DEO (S) Ludhiana. Winners were awarded cash prizes . Mr Nahar Singh ‘Kaler’ presided over the function.

Declamation: Jatinder Kaur, Government High School, Jamalpur Avana, Ist; Poonam Sharma Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School Ludhiana 2nd; Sumit Joshi , Nauria Mal Jain Senior Secondary School Ludhiana, 3rd.

Painting: Puneet Kumar, Nauria Mal Jain Senior Secondary School Ludhiana, 1st; Mandeep Kaur Sargodha Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School Ludhiana 2nd ; Roopali Gupta, Nauria Mal Jain Senior Secondary School Ludhiana 3rd.

Rajiv's birth anniversary: Shishu Bal Adarsh School, New Hargobind Nagar, celebrated Rajiv Gandhi’s birthday yesterday by paying tributes to him. Mr Rajinder Batra, principal, said a painting competition was also organised and winners were awarded prizes.

Gesture for mentally challenged: Mentally challenged children, students of Nirdosh, a school for mentally challenged children, were taken for movie Spiderman II courtesy HSBC Bank.The bank staff picked up the students from Rotary Bhawan where the school is housed and run by the members of Inner Wheel Club.

CMC nursing team wins: Bhangra team of CMC Nursing College achieved first position in SNA platinum jubilee celebrations and XXI biennial conference held at Dumra Auditorium in this week. The team won under captaincy of Miss Daman Deep Dhillon and coaching of Mr TS Shergill. Taninderjit, Parneet, Amanpreet, Nisha, Rajni, Aman Inder, Hardip, Jaspreet and Diljot comprised the team.

Amritpal Kaur and Rupinder Deol got first prize in poster making and Diljot Kaur bagged first prize in the on the spot painting.

The Principal said the bhangra team and other prize winners would be participating in the All India Cultural Programme Competition to be held in October 2004 at Kanchipuram in Tamilnadu.

Welcome party: A welcome party was organised by Commerce Association of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan Cmapus, Model Town, Ludhiana on Saturday.

A cultural programme was presented by the senior students of commerce faculty to welcome the freshers. The freshers also presented various cultural items. The Principal of the college, Dr (Mrs) Anup Kaur Bansal, appreciated the efforts of the students.

Poem recitation competition: English poem recitation and story telling competition was held in Baba Isher Singh (N) Senior Secondary Public School, BRS Nagar, Ludhiana. Thirty tiny tots of nursery, LKG and UKG and 64 students form primary section participated.The school Principal, Ms Aneeta Kundra, presided over the function. Dr Ms Simran Sidhu, Dr Mrs Shalini Sharma, Dr (Mrs) Nanda and Dr (Mrs) Thind from Department of Human Development and Sociology (PAU, Ludhiana) were the judges.

‘Akshay Urja Divas’ celebrated

Mandi Gobindgarh, August 21
The 60th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi was celebrated here today as “Akshay Urja Divas”. Students from various local schools took out a march from Rest House to the municipal stadium.

The DC, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mr S.K. Ahluwalia, flagged off an exhibition vehicle carrying instruments generating “akshay urja”, which was brought here by the Punjab Urja Vikas Agency.

Mr Sandeep Hans, SDM, Amloh, Mr Jatinder Singh, Tehsildar, Mr Sohan Singh, Naib Tehsildar, Mandi Gobindgarh, Mr Satish Kumar, CDPO, Amloh, Mr Lachhman Singh, Executive Officer, Municipal Council, and Mr Sukhwinder Singh, District Manager, PAIDA also spoke. OC

Cliche performs in city

Ludhiana, August 21
Foot tapping music, colourful lights and cool breeze, combined together were the perfect ingredients to make people dance at a dance party held at local Satluj Club last night. A liquor company had brought to the city the live performance of Caliche, an all-girls group that put up a lively performance. Accompanied by VJ Mini Mathur, the group participated in the concluding of the company’s ‘message in a bottle contest’.

The group performed various popular numbers on request of the audience. 'It's time to disco’ was quite a popular choice going by the number of requests about it. The group also sang from their first album Hyderabad Blues.

The group's songs also figure in the movie Hyderabad Blues 2. Caliche is India’s first girls band that teams Candy, Shazneen and Chery. VJ Mini Mathur of the MTV fame kept city’s creme de la creme captivated for the better part of the evening.

The three-week-long contest concluded here in a lucky draw. One lucky winner Mr MS Bedi was selected from the city for an all-expenses paid cruise Holiday for two, ex Singapore. The total value of the prize is pegged at approximately Rs 1 lakh.
