Journal on neurosurgery launched

On the second day of the 13th Annual National Neurotrauma Conference of the Neurotrauma Society of India, various sessions and lectures were presented.
Prof Mark Fitzgerald, Director, Emergency and Trauma Centre, Melbourne, gave insight on the emergency care of neurotrauma. He said as per the research carried out it was found that 30 per cent of the people with head injuries die during the pre-hospital period.

Thus it is very important to provide the best paramedic facilities during that one hour.

On the first day of the conference , first Indian journal of neurosurgery was unveiled at the 13th Annual National Neurotrauma Conference held at CMCH .

Dr. S. Mohanty, President of the Neurotrauma Society of India (NSI), unveiled the journal here yesterday at CMCH during the conference .

Prof. Mohanty stated that traffic accidents were the main cause of deaths and disability due to head and spine trauma. He added, “What’s unfortunate is that in India maximum people experience trauma fall in the age group of 15-26 years which is the most productive year of life. On an average between five and seven persons die everyday due to road accidents in New Delhi only.

Thus, it is important to enforce strict traffic rules to ensure complete safety on roads.

He also requested the neurosurgeons to motivate and train doctors in neurosurgery and trauma management so that trauma care could be provided at the remotest region of the country, too. He said a small country like Japan has over 600 neurosurgeons where as India with a population of over 1 billion just has 1,500 neurosurgeons.

Around 200 delegates from different parts of the world are participating in the conference. On the second day Dr. A.K. Mahapatra, AIIMS, New Delhi, and Honorary Secretary NSI, Dr John Belstaed, Accident & Emergency Counsultant, the UK, Dr. S. Mohanty, Prof. Dott. F. Servadei, Italy, Prof. J. Wig, PGI, are a few among the speakers.

Arya College judokas excel

Judokas of the local Arya College for boys have made their alma mater proud by emerging overall champions in the Panjab University Inter-College Judo Championship held at the university campus, Chandigarh on August 20.

According to Mr Rakesh Singh, SAI coach who trained the boys, the lads gave a stupendous performance during the meet bagging three gold, one silver and bronze medal each. These students of BA I not only enabled the college judo team to come out triumphant but also created history by becoming champions in the judo meet for the first time.

Dr S M Sharma, Principal, Arya College, joined Prof V K Dhir, Dr Parminder Singh, secretary sports, Prof R L Behl, and Prof Jagtar Singh, in charge judo team, in congratulating the members of the team.

Hardeep Singh won a gold medal in the below-66 kg category while Anil Jaura clinched a double. In the open category, Anil clinched a gold but lost in the below-90 kg category and had to be content with a silver.

In the below-81 kg category, Satinder Singh gave a good account of himself by winning the gold while Balwinder Singh finished runner-up to bag the silver medal.

Meanwhile, for this achievement, Dr Sharma has announced a scholarship of Rs 2,000 annually for the winners of the gold medal, Rs 1,500 for the silver medallist and Rs 1,000 for the bronze medallist.

BVM swimmers rule the pool

Swimmers of the local Bharatiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, continued to dominate the proceedings taking their tally to 12 medals, including six gold, on the second day of the swimming competition of the Ludhiana District Inter-Zone Games being held at the AS Senior Secondary School, Khanna, near here today.

Following the fine performance by Smile and Bikarmjeet Singh (u-17) yesterday who had won three gold and three silver medals, respectively, Sukhjeet (u-19) and Kishanjeet (u-14) made their presence felt today. Sukhjeet won gold medals in the 200 m buttterfly and 400 m individual medley events while Kishanjeet proved his mettle in the 50 m freestyle and finished second in the 50 m and 200 m back-stroke events.

Ms Sunil Arora, Principal of the BVM School, congratulated the students and the sports in charge, Mr Baljeet Singh, for the outstanding performance.

Govt College win handball title

Ludhiana, August 21
Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys, Ludhiana, drubbed GGD SD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, 28-13 to romp home victorious and emerge zonal champions in the Panjab University Handball Tournament held at the university campus, Chandigarh today.

According to Mr Devinder Singh Chahal, sports in charge, SD Government College, Rajdeep Singh Virk and Avtar Singh stood tall among others to help their college emerge winners. They contributed 10 and 12 goals, respectively.

Ms Indra Bhatia, Principal of SD Government College, applauded the team’s achievement .

Ranjit Singh House win soccer final

Ludhiana, August 21
Lads of Ranjit Singh House managed to scrape past the spirited opponents from Prof Mohan Singh House to script a 1-0 victory and emerge champions in the Inter-House Football Tournament which concluded at the Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, here today.

The all-important goal was scored by Pavneet Singh in the 23rd minute of the first half of the cliff-hanger.
