Plant clinic a boon for farmers Ludhiana, August 25 Dr S.S. Gill, Additional Director of Extension Education said the clinic examined the diseased plants and suggested suitable treatment technology in order to get more crop-yield. It was the responsibility of the scientists of the clinic to visit the fields of the farmers to examine their problems and suggest the solutions on the spot. The clinic carried out problems related to the agriculture to the research centre of the university. The farmers’ service centre sells the improved seed and agricultural literature and culture. At least 10,000 farmers visit the clinic every year for treating their plants. The farmers can discuss their problems on the telephone no 0161-2410001 and 0161-2401960-70 Extension 417. This telephone facility is available on the working days of the university, he added. Dr N.S. Butter, In charge of the clinic, appealed to the farmers to bring their diseased plants along with roots in a polythene. In case of fruit plants, only the diseased part of the plant should be brought for the examination, he said. |
Students do their bit for SOS children Ludhiana, August 25 Volunteers of the SOS have been visiting different colleges of the city, selling rakhis to raise funds for those orphan, destitute and abandoned children who are being taken care of in the home. As part of their endeavour, a team visited Khalsa College for Women here today. The Principal, Ms Virinder Thind, encouraged students to buy rakhis from SOS volunteers and do their bit towards the orphans living in these homes. Mr S.S. Sandhu, media coordinator of the SOS, said earlier the team had put up stalls in Devki Devi Jain College, Government College for Women, and Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujjarkhan Complex, and received good response. He sought the cooperation of city residents to help the organisation in its mission to provide a good life to the destitute children. |

Workshop on Linux gets under way Our Correspondent Ludhiana, August 25 According to Dr A.S. Bansal, Principal of the institute, two-hour sessions would be held on four days with a gap of a few days in between to give trainees sufficient time to work on their assignments. The modules to be covered during the workshop include introduction to Linux, installation of services and software packages, SQI database and “C” language on Linux. On the first day of the workshop, faculty from Sucharu Systems provided the students with information on procurement of Linux and its compatibility with a Windows user. “Linux operating system” was explained as available under the General Public License (GPL) scheme wherein anyone could use the operating system free of cost, without worrying about laws against piracy. The operating system offered a complete set of software solutions. The students were informed about how the look and feel of Linux graphical environment matched that of Windows. The workshop would conclude on September 3. Medical camp
A six-day medical camp for routine health check-up of students and staff is being organised at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women. The camp, which began on Monday, was being held in association with the local Civil Hospital. A team of doctors comprising Dr J.M. Singh (SMO Eye, mobile), Dr Gurdeep Ghuman (dentist), Dr I.S. Bagga (eye specialist), Dr Sangeeta Singh (dermatologist) and Ms Santosh Bhatia (district MEIO) from the hospital was conducting dental and eye check-ups besides blood tests of students and staff. On the opening day of the camp, nearly 250 students were examined and advised follow-up. The Principal of the college, Dr Madanjeet Kaur Sahota, stressed the need for regular medical check-up in order to make oneself physically and mentally fit. |

Chitvan, Shikha crowned Miss Fresher Ludhiana, August 25 Amrita of BBA bagged the Ms Elegant title, while Preeti of BCom-I clinched the Miss Beautiful Smile title. In the postgraduate section, Shikha of the PGDCA was declared Miss Fresher. Sakshi of MA (sociology) and Chatu of the PGDCA were declared first and second runners-up, respectively. poll fray Ludhiana, August 25 There are 19 candidates in the fray. Out of these, six are from local city colleges. Their names are: Prof H.S. Dua, Prof Jagpal Singh, Prof L.S. Bedi, Prof Parneet Singh, Dr Yograj and Prof Davinder Pal Kaur. All candidates are actively canvassing for ensuring their victory. Some of them even have taken long leave for the purpose. |
