GMCH chief, faculty at loggerheads
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 26
The faculty and the Director-Principal of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, are at loggerheads with each other after the Faculty Welfare Board alleged that the Director-Principal, Prof H.M. Swami, did not pay heed to any of the genuine demands raised by them. The Director in turn allegedly accused the board of running a parallel administration in the hospital. The board has now called an emergency meeting of its general body next week to apprise members of the developments and decide the further course of action.

The demands of the faculty include granting of various allowances (academic and conveyance), problems faced by the faculty on contract, exodus of faculty members to other institutes, framing of a proper policy for ex-India leave to the faculty and staff, and constituting the college council as per the Medical Council of India requirements.

In fact, the faculty executive has also alleged that the hospital has allowed private practioners to operate from the GMCH, besides harassment of the faculty by the authorities.

In a press note issued by the president of the body, Prof B.S. Chavan, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, and the secretary, Dr Varinder Saini, alleged that professor Swami in turn charged the faculty with trying to run a parallel administration in the hospital.

Despite repeated attempts, the Director could not be contacted.
