Warrants against DSP in harassment case
Ludhiana, August 26 Ms Bhupinder Kaur (29), daughter of a local businessman, Mr Amrik Singh Kang, had moved the court last year after the Ludhiana police allegedly did not register a case on her complaint. She alleged that the police wanted to shield the DSP. Her brothers and father had been implicated in false cases. Narrating her tale of woes, the victim said she was married to Rajinder Singh, son of the DSP, in February 2000, and the ceremony solemnised with pomp and show. Her husband was given a Santro car by her parents, besides other household items. From the day of the marriage, her harassment at the hands of her in-laws began. Her husband started asking for monetary help from her father, which he refused. She alleged she was treated like a maid and when she was eight months pregnant, she was beaten up by her husband. When she gave birth to a daughter, her in-laws refused to accept her till her father paid Rs 1.5 lakh. Finally, they left her at her parents’ house along with her infant daughter in 2002. She submitted an application to the then SSP, who referred her case to the Marital Disputes Cell. Meanwhile, several cases including that of theft, fraud and attempt to murder were registered against her family members. Bhupinder Kaur said she feared that more cases could come against them as the opposite party would try to pressurise her to withdraw the case. “They had been warning me that I was stirring the hornet’s nest.” |

Three get 10-year RI for carrying poppy husk
Ludhiana, August 26 The three to have been handed out the sentence are Avtar Singh of Purilian village; Jagtar Singh, alias Tari, of Hiran village; and Kali Dass of Sahnewal. Delivering the verdict, Mr Sodhi held that the prosecution had successfully established that the accused were found in possession of 18 bags of poppy husk, each weighing 40 kg. The judge declined the plea of leniency made by the accused. The accused had been booked under Sections 15, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act at the Salem Tabri police station on July 25, 2001. The then SHO of the police station, Mr Waryam Singh, had received a tip-off that the accused were travelling with poppy husk on the Noorwala road and heading towards Bahadurke village for the purpose of selling it, according to the prosecution. Following the information, a police party intercepted the accused at a barricade near Bahadurke village. The accused were travelling in a tractor-trailer. DSP Manjit Singh was summoned and a search was conducted in his presence. The police seized the poppy husk from bags carried by the accused and arrested them. However, during the trial the accused pleaded not guilty and claimed false implication. They also examined six witnesses in support of their contentions. But upholding the evidence on record, the court found them guilty and handed out the sentence. |
